Hi, guys. We'll the old rear tires on my 1256 Hydro need replacement. I had a new tube put in one of them today. The brainiac inflated it to 30 PSI and set it outside the building to bake in the sun and 90* temps all afternoon. Center of the tread is now so bulged out the tire is at least 2" taller than the one on the other side. Whole tractor now sits noticably crooked. In other words, they're done. Internal structure of the tire must be breaking down, would be my guess.

So.... since I have to put snow chains on these things in the winter I'd like to get a tire that is as close to the original in every way as possible (the chains are tempramental to install, as I'm sure many of you are aware, even to small stuff like proper inflation pressure).

Tires are the original 1972-vintage Goodyear 2-ply rated 23 x 10.5 -12. Tread pattern appears as alternating rows of paralellograms. (I think they're called Terra Turf or something like that- didn't have my reading glasses on when I looked at them a few minutes ago).

Best suggestions?

Thanks in advance, guys.

let me check the hillside, I might have a set on rims, not sure if they are the same as what was on my 1050, if I remember, I'll check the hillside. If so you can have them, I sold my 1050 and have been slowly getting rid of extra parts.

depending on what your doing with your 1256, if your just cutting grass then I'd go with the same type, but if your plowing, tilling, grading, etc. I'd try and find a set of atv tires. you can always just put a few extra links in your chains to make them longer. If I have a set you could always use them for grass cutting and get a set of ag tires for every thing else....or make a set of duals for it...lol. dt1050

Yeah, I'm just cutting grass with it in the summer and snow-blowing in the winter.

I just got the tire chains figured out a few years ago (like 15 years ago!). Some dingbat decided he knew how to bend the links so they worked "better" than how they were originally designed. Once I knew how they were supposed to look and made them look that way, they work fine once again. Even the THOUGHT of modifying them makes me shiver.

That would be great if you have a set laying around. Would be much appreciated.

I have a set of 23 8.50 x 12, so they are just a little skinner than yours. the chains should still work, they would just hang down the sides a little more. good tread, a little weather cracked, but always held air on rims if you want them send me a PM. thanks dt.

that's way to much air in them tires you don't need 30 psi in the tires 10 to 12psi is plenty. what do you do with the tractor? if you plow snow and all that I would go with a lug tire. and I wouldn't get them at tractor supply there high dollar. to get the best bang for your buck is a tire store on ebay... you can get 4 ply tires on ebay for the same price as 2 ply at a tire shop or anywhere like that

I would take it back and make the guy replace it.

:ditto: I am replacing the turf tires on my 1225 with lug tires so if you want the turf tires there the same as what you have. there in good shape I don't have tubes in them and they been holding air for 3 months and I have wheel weights on it. but if I were you I would just spend the money and get the lug tires, then you don't have to mess with tire chains and all that stuff

EK- that's an attractive offer. Are you willing to part with the wheel weights too? If so, the tires are a minor issue, really. I'll take 'em if I can get the wheel weights- name your number. I'm driving distance from you.

Putting on 50 lbs every winter so I have enough weight over the rear tires for snow-blowing and then having to lose that weight every spring is getting old! My Cardiologist is about to have kittens.

Shoot me a PM.

As for taking things back to the shop that butchered my seemingly-simple tube install operation....... well, I didn't tell them "15 PSI maximum" so some of the blame rests with me, I suppose. I know, I know, you would think that would be OBVIOUS but...... I guess not. And there is no max pressure spec molded into he sidewall of the tire, either (I know- I checked). I don't get in people's faces like I used to. It just isn't a good way of living for me any more. Little stuff doesn't bother me like it used to and I'm glad of that.

You will still need tire chains with lug tires when plowing, I never run without chains. lugs tires are primarily good with dirt, unless you get skinny tires. I do agree that they do help in the snow though. The chains from turf tires will surely fit some lugs tires, I switch chains between turfs and lugs all the time.

yep, even my WD 45 with new AG tires that were loaded with calcuim was hopeless in the snow/ice. it would just sit and spin, threw a set of bear claws on it and it was almost unstoppable....when it would spin them bear claws would even tear up pieces of asphalt.

Turf tires with chains are definitely superior to AGs when you have snow and ice.

Ags, with the 'ladder' type chains that we use on turf's aren't all that great as they tend to fall down between the lugs.

There are chains designed for Ags that work great, but they aren't cheap or easy to find.

As for weight, I'm a firm believer in Rim Guard. You can get more weight per tire than with wheel weights, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper as well.

I just had Rim Guard put in the tires of my HDT1000, and it cost me $3.20/Gal. installed. Since it weighs 11Lb./Gal. that's a cost of $.29/Lb.

For weight I use wheel weights and a weight box. Never got into filling my tires because iwhen you take them off, they are a bear to install. Atleast the rims on my HT23 parts machine were loaded when we got it with the other Johnson, and we switched those onto the HT20 my dad was selling. Me and my brother had fun putting those on...

I have plowed 15inchs or more of snow with no chains the plow was angled of corse

well DNickle came this morning and bought the old tires off my 1225. Heck of a nice guy... the tires are in great condition so they will out last the tractor I think. the tractor is a family air loom and if I were him I would retire it and restore it, I mean it sounds like he has a big yard and mowing with that much every week its going to wear out sometime to the point of no repair... that's why I retired the 850, I told him to make sure he tells the tire man 10psi. they should install them for free I would throw a fit especially if I used them for all my tires needs. he says he don't have room for more bolens but I think he had bolens fever when he walked in the garage and he seen 8 of them and all my attachments besides the danuser posthole digger and the bulldog trencher... he was really checking out the HT's I got a feeling if one becomes for sale and the price is right he will but one. and another one bit by the bolens bug and now infected with bolens fever :sidelaugh
