Recent 1978 SS/19.9 Suburban Purchase

So a couple of weeks ago I stealthily added a 1978 Sears SS/19.9 Twin to my signature. I've been meaning to write a forum post about it ever since but things have distracted me and I have not even given myself the time. Big block 19.9's are more common up here in Alberta than you would think. I've seen four of them on kijiji so far this year. The first one was a Roper, it had only the 42" mowing deck and it needed a "tune up". Sticker price was $500. Next one was selling with a loader and a hideous baby blue and red paint job for $3,100 (MTF user Randyb2001 managed to snag it for a much lesser price). The third one was selling with an electric 3 point hitch and rototiller for $700.

I got the fourth one I saw for $875.

It came with a 48" mowing deck, 39" snowblower and a 38" tiller/electric 3ph combo.

The dashboard is mostly intact except for the broken choke lever. Hour meter is, of course, not working.

The nose cone is broken in two ways and the hose clamps you see are the only thing that's holding the hinges on. Not to worry, I have others.

Of course, the Onan N52M! It smokes a bit on startup but nothing like my SS/16. The idle was adjusted way too high because of the carburetor issues this thing has bit hopefully the extra carburetor that I received will remedy that. Only thing I'm worried about is a knock coming from cylinder #2. I'll have a video of it soon.

Another thing that's curious about this tractor is the fact that it's an SS/19.9 (even though it also says GT/19.9 on the dash). This is confirmed by the included instruction manual for an SS/19.9, which lists 917.608501 as the matching model number. My 1978 GT 19.9 is 917.608500 with no decals to be found anywhere on the hood or dash.

So as of right now, I don't know what I'm going to do with this tractor. If it turns out that the nasty knock is a connecting rod, I'll part it out and rebuild my GT/19.9. Either way, what I do know is that I've reached my limit. I have more tractors than I'll ever need and more implements than I can use. I hope to sell the tiller and electric 3 point hitch this fall to recoup some of the cost.

You Canadians and your strange Sears, eh!

Strange that its got a black and silver dash too, never saw a black and silver Sears north of the border
The dash posts look replaced, but not original. It looks like the dash posts would've matched the yellow frame and in front of the dash behind the motor.
I have seen a few on craigslist around my area but they don't stay on there very long. Nice machine.

Yeah, sure I'll sell the electric 3 point. I don't need a third one around.
PM me and we'll work something out.

Interesting! I haven't seen the Canadian version of a 19.9 until now. Nice score.
Nice Find!

My initial goal was to have one of each of the Onan powered Sears Suburbans. I bought this with the intention of replacing my other 19.9 seeing as how this is in better shape but the sub optimal condition of the engine (compression slightly low, possible rod knock) means I now have two 19.9's with worn out engines in them - not that useful.

If I buy a BG-MS powered Sears, I have no need for my GT/18 with the nasty B48M in it. So, 6 is realistically the limit.

So, I have a video on my youtube channel now. It demonstrates the knocking noise the engine is making. It's quite long, so to get to the actual segment where I demonstrate the knock, skip to 6:00.
That sounds pretty knock-y to my untrained ear, Rory.
The tiller looks to be in great shape and sounds good......The knock in the Onan knock doesn't sound real good but its probably got a lot left in it yet :)
if i was you i would look on ebay or contact boomer for a rod tear it down and see the damage done get crank polish. no since in letting her blow when it dont smoke. its worth putting a rod into
You might contact Boomer. He is an Onan guru on this site and sells used Onan parts. His handle on here is boomers_influence.

I don't really know for sure but you might begin by "decarboning" the engine just to be sure there isn't carbon built up to where it contacts the piston, causing the 'knocking" sound.

You might also check the valve clearance (but I don't think that is the cause of your engine's noise.)

I recently took in an 18 hp Onan BG-MS that couldn't turn over due to carbon between the head and piston. I have some parts on order with Boomer I need to get the old girl running again.

^ditto^
For an engine that runs that well, id would be worth fixing the cause of the knock.
Nice looking Machine.
