I have a model 5024 with the D-433 engine that I would like to rebuild. I have torn the engine down and the piston is bad with some marks on the cylinder. I would like to bore the cylinder and have a shop that can do it. At one time you could buy a .030 over size piston and ring assembly to overhaul these engines. I can not find one anymore from the resources, websites, or parts shops that I know. Does anyone have an assembly they would like to sell me or know of place that has one? I would greatly appreciate any help anyone may have.

Hi! I have not rebuilt one of these but from what I have read on the forum the cylinder sleeve is pretty tough and rarely need to be bored out. A good cleaning and honing and a new piston and rings may be all you need unless the sleeve is greatly damaged. Hopefully someone on the forum that does a lot of rebuilding will weigh in on this to offer some suggestions. Thanks and good luck with your project. Bill

It's probably more cost effective to find a good used jug to replaced the scored one if it can't be honed out. I have personally never seen an oversized piston for a D-series, and I know even the standard sizes are getting harder to find. If you need engine pieces, PM me...I have a lot of NOS stuff and I may be able to help you out.

I agree with the other folks here, the piston is aluminum and the cylinder is a good grade of steel and unless you throw a rod and wedge needles between the piston and cylinder wall the cylinder should be able to be honed to remove light scoring. I do have a .030 over piston and rings, but I don't think I want to part with the set just yet. I may need it later on in life if I ever wear out one of my cylinders. I probably won't live that long though. LOL

Thanks for the quick replies and the suggestions. I have tried honing the cylinder and it still has some marks on it. I also bought another engine and found it was bad also. It is because of the work and expense to date that I am opting to bore the cylinder and use an over size piston. Jimboy, I will certainly keep you in mind if I need some other parts. Lawnboy 77, if you should decide to part with the piston assembly, please let me know. Maybe someone else will check this thread and have some good news for me.
