Really need some help with MF 165 wiring

Hi all,

I am trying to get the wiring straightened out after someone made a bunch of changes and splices on my cousin's 165. The main problem is that the battery won't charge even though I measure 14.8 volts coming off of the alternator. None of the lights work either which I would like to correct. I was hoping that someone had a wiring diagram for this tractor that they could post or send me because I have nothing to go by. The manual that I have been using doesn't have anything at all about wiring in it and there is no money to get another manual until next month and I need the tractor before then.

My cousin is can't see well enough to get a regular driver's license, but can still see well enough to drive the tractor to and from town for supplies along with his only large tractor for farm use.

I was truly hoping that someone here could help.

Thank you,

Steven

ok i would love to help but i need some more info before i can help you hear pictures of the alternator would be the best but if you cant do that a good description will also do first thing being is it the stock alternator / generator or is it an alternator that someone else has put on after the fact like off a gm car /truck ? if so how many wire hook ups are on it two or three ? get me this info and i will see what i can do for ya if i can't help you i am sure someone else will be able to :thThumbsU

also have you looked to see if there is a fuse blown most tractors have a fuse between the alternator and the battery somewhere

Hi,

When I looked at the alternator/generator, as it sits in the tractor with the lead pointing to the rear of the tractor, there are 4 wires on it. There is a male plug that fits in the middle that fits into a receptacle in the alt/gen (black wires). Then on either side at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions there are 2 wires that are hocked to two small posts coming out of the alt/gen. Right now I am not sure where they go as I have not been able to trace each one yet. I know there are 2 visible fuses, one is for the lights (which isn't connected right now and goes to the multi-position light switch on the right of the dash panel. The other I am not yet sure of. There is a small black box under the dash panel on the right side and looks to have 4 wires on it, but I can't see well enough under there to be sure. I was looking in a "dark hole" (under-dash) against the light sky. I am planning to go out there today and get a good trouble light so I can actually see the connections of everything under the dash.

Also, the fuses that I have checked are good. The only one that is missing a fuse is the one to the lights.

I hope this helps. If I get nowhere today, I will photograph the alt/gen and the areas in question.

Thank you for your help.

Steven

well if the generator / alternator is putting out 14.8 volts it sounds to me like you got yourself a bad regulator that is that black box up under the dash you were taking about i would start there
