I am getting ready to order my JD4720. I was already set to order the JD4720 with R1 tires. But know I have second thoughts. What if I have a tree down next to the pond and I will have to drive over the lawn to get the tree stump and get it to the meadow?

Can I do this with R1 tires without ruining the lawn around the pond?

But if I go with the R4 tires, will I not lose a lot of traction in the meadow and woods?

Please share you insights.

Thank you,
Regards,

Friz,
I really think that this is personal preference. You can pull a tree stump out with turf, R1 and R4 tires. If the ground is wet, all the mentioned tires will tear up your lawn. R1 will probably have the best traction but could be the toughest on lawn.

On tires, there are as many opinions as there are people who own tractors! I dont have R1s but can tell you that R4s can be pretty rough on the lawn when its wet, and my 2305 isnt nearly as heavy as the 4000 series you have. If i needed R1s for most of my chores, thats what i would get tho and just wait for stuff to dry out in order to not tear it up.

Other forum members with bigger tractors and R1s can probably give you better advice than me.

FRIZ,
I had to make the same decision awhile ago on a 2320. I went with R-4's. I have a couple of wet spots in the lawn. This year has been very and consistently wet. The R-4's will leave a definte "track" if I don't let it dry out but even turf tires will leave a trail. It isn't so much the track I have to watch, it's the turns. If I turn too sharp the R-4's will literally rip the grass out. That will happen even if it's dry too. Your tractor is going to be considerably heavier, so keep that in mind. Like the previous post, ot all boils down what you're going to be doing the most and applying your preference to the decision.
