I have a 2004,Troy-Bilt Pony Lawn Tractor with a 17.5 hp B&S, one cylinder engine and a continuous adjustable speed lever with 7 fixed speed setting notches. I have a few questions about this tractor which I hope someone can answer. What is the mechanism that sets the speed as the speed lever is adjusted? I have looked at the parts diagrams and it may be a variable diameter pulley since I see no connection to the trans-axle other than the drive pulley, brake and Forward/Neutral/Reverse lever. Recently I have been loosing tractor speed, without a decrease in engine speed, (sometimes to the point of stopping), as I go up small slopes that I previously had no problems negotiating. My first thought is that the drive belt system is slipping. I checked the operators manual and found no reference to drive belt adjustments.
I will be cleaning up the drive belt mechanism to see if that solves the problem and will try to determine what gives me the speed adjustability. It would be nice to have more information before I start my tractor adventure.

I don't know that particular tractor but they're all about the same idea.

First thing you need to do is determine if the belt is slipping. It should be fairly easy to tell just by looking at the belt. And it is the most probable and easiest to fix. Usually there is no adjustment on the drive belt,,if it is stretched it needs replaced.

But until you determine that,,there is no use guessing what the problem could be. It could be so many other things.
