OK, time for you guys to laugh your you-know-whats off. I took my clutch off today, there is nothing but metal-to-metal from the clutch to the sprocket. Is this the way life is or is there supposed to be some friction material between the clutch and the sprocket? Or is it supposed to be the metal part of the clutch engaging the sprocket? You answer this question right, I don't have to trash this saw the old man handed down to me. Thanks, gentleman.

i've seen some saws with metal-to-metal, and some saws with friction material... as to the XL, i don't know. i'm sure someone else will know better than I!
more importantly, if the clutch doesn't slip, it's probably working fine.

I have several xl's and xl-2's around here and none have the friction material. Come to think of it, I dont think I have seen a saw with a friction material type clutch...yet. Don't toss it :Stop::care: Parts are available IF you know where to look.

the very early xl-12 which was blue had a 3 shoe clutch with springs, and shoe lining, the later type which was red,had a s type clutch,no lining, these were to be replaced as a matched set clutch drum and clutch, thelater blue xl-12 clutch, could be exchanged with the early red xl -12,due to the fact that the crank shaft was the same (point& cond) then they went with eletronic coil
