PTO problem

619 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  joeww121
My 1980 Power King 2418 starts up just fine, but when I engage the electric clutch to drive the mower the tractor shuts down. The mower turns freely, so the problem appears to be electrical. I suspect the problem lies in the clutch, or the clutch switch, or in the wiring. There are no safety switches in the circuit. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what is the cuase of the problem? Thank you. Joe

I would start by disconnecting the wires at the PTO....then start up the tractor...engage the PTO and see if it still shuts down...if not check the gap opening on the clutch...there are plenty of youtubes on how to do that and to adjust it if necesssary...if adjustment is not the problem...replace the clutch...if it does shut down then you have to trace the wiring and see if is rubbed bare at some point , rubbing on the chassis.....if both ends of the wires are accessible...disconnect them at both ends, at the switch ...and at the PTO ....use a multi tester and set it to continuity...touch one lead from the tester to either end of the now disconnected wire...touch the other lead to the chassis...if you have continuity...you are grounding to the chassis somewhere..

Thank you GB. I think you hit the nail on it's head. Prior to reading your post, I found a cut in the sheathing of one of the clutch wires. After making repairs, the tractor is preforming as it should. Have a good day. Joe
