I'm starting my second project this year. I was given a 1964 Simplicity LandLord, rototiller attachment, and the full manual. I was told it hasn't ran in 5 years. The last time it did run, it smoked heavily and burned lots of oil. Both rear tires are brand new and includes a 12volt battery.

Yesterday I got it home and pressure washed it. It was and still is covered in oil. Ill have to tear the tractor down and use some heavy degreaser after I get it running. I'm thinking that the flange gasket has a leak but previous owner thinks its' the rings.

Today, I cleaned the carb and took the gas tank out. I need to find another gas tank. The carb was an absolute mess. I was able to save the gaskets for now. Ill find a rebuilt kit later once I know it runs.

Missing Parts:

Air Cleaner assembly.
Body Panels (hydraulic covers)
Head Lights

I took a bunch of pictures before and after washing it. Some pictures are fuzzy or overly saturated.

Just wanted to post a quick update. Tractor is running and moving just fine now. A couple days ago I got the tractor running and my grandfather noticed that the frame was cracked and the drive shaft was worn down around the bushing connected to the motor. Wish I took pictures of it before. My grandfather welded on a couple washers to fix the issue and He welded the frame. I feel quite guilty for not knowing how to weld.

The hydraulic used to lift the attachments is leaking lots of oil. We tried replacing the O-Rings but its' still leaking. Ill call hydraulic shop on monday to see if I can get some rings. The generator is keeping charge (15 amps). We fixed the steering column. It was missing the bearings so we fashioned one with a bolt.

I ordered a gasket set for the carburetor & I was able to find an air cleaner for the motor.

I recorded a quick video of its' progress. Sorry for the lousy camera work.

Another update.

I got the air cleaner in the mail today. I wasn't able to find the correct one from the specific tractor. I had to get one from an Allis Chalmers B10. Both tractors use a Briggs & Stratton 23D. I rebuilt the carburetor. Still need to see how it runs now.

I went to check to see if the oil seal was leaking on the rear end and it still is. I took the tire off and found that the keyway for the hub is worn down and loose. The axle is very loose and traveling side to side about a half inch. I readjusted it and tightened things back up. Still need to move hub over and get new keyway.

We are in the same boat, I just started working on my 64. Fun machines
That looks really good. Are you going to try and find a hydraulic kit or stay with the manual lift? I think the 990308/ 990314 uses the 990339 Hydraulic Kit.

I am staying with my double lift handles since they are rarer then the hydraulic lift.
Ah ok. Perfectly understandable. How common are these hydraulic LandLords compared to the manual lift? I need to find a O-Ring kit for the cylinder. The couple local repair shops i've talked to can't find parts.

Tips:
1. Take a welding class at a community college. It's not nearly as hard as you think. I was a licensed welder as my profession for a few years. You just need to learn how to use a wire feed mig and a stick welder. Everything else is just to make it pretty or for weird stuff like welding under water. You can probably get good enough to be better than anyone you know in less than a week.

2. The best degreaser is Oven Cleaner, Just don't get it on any aluminum parts it'll corrode them. Whenever I get a new project, before I even get it home I stop by the grocery store, get 2 cans of over cleaner, douse it in it... then drive over to my local carwash with the coin operated pressure washer and spend about 20minuites on it. For around $10 it comes out like new. But again, no oven cleaner on aluminum parts unless you plan to replace them.

I have a pair of 64's myself. One is in Squire 9 clothing and is all original. Runs and mows fantastic,

The one I just got less than a week ago was found in a barn, where it took a 10 to 15 year nap. I had it running about an hour after I got it home.

Here are the 2 of them, and the 2nd pic is the other one after toying with it a little today.

I am a fan of pretty much all old GT's but this series Simplicity, with the round hoods are just my all time favorites. Great childhood memory's on a couple of them. My parents had one that mom used to put me down for a nap on, and my grandfather also had one.

Thats awesome. It's definitely nice to have those special childhood memories. Those two simplicities appear to be in great shape. What kind of shape is the landlord's gas tank in? Mines got a small rust spot right under where the cap is.

Sorry I haven't posted an update for what i've been doing with the LandLord. I actually forgot about this post. I took the rear end apart to change the seals and put in a new gasket. I messed up putting it back together. The axle is acting like its' hung up. I'm waiting for permatex to arrive in the mail and ill take it apart again. Definitely had lots of sludge in it so it was good to clean it.

The gas tank is a funny story. One I forgot all about until I picked this up last Friday.

Probably 7 or 8 years ago I was at a Salvage yard and found a near perfect Landlord gas tank in a pile. So of course I bought it even tho I did not at the time own a Simplicity. I had to save it.

A great friend who I got this pair from, stopped by to pick up an Ariens deck I had for his Ariens. He mentioned he needed a Simplicity tank. I gave him the tank.

The years pass by, he needs to move some stuff and offers me 1st the Squire, then a few months later offers me the Landlord. We roll a 1/2 dozen JD 110's out of the way to get to the Landlord and he hands me the mint tank and says " Here, you can have your tank back". He needed it for this Landlord. Maybe only an interesting story to me , as I gave it to him and forgot all about it.

Yes both of these old girls are in really good original shape. I'm 48 and they are 51 and I think they are in better shape than I am :sidelaugh

The original Landlord tank was pretty religious ..... really holy.

The Squire tank was leaking at a seam and that has been repaired.

The Landlord, many moons ago, someone converted from magneto ignition to battery ignition. There were 2 bad wires that needed replacing and I had to put the tank in it. It fired up, no kidding on the 2nd crank.

Awesome. What ever happened with the john deeres?

Same with mine. The wire hooked to the coil was loose and needed a new end. I really like the battery ignition but I plan on switching it back to magneto for the sake of originality (sorry i'm a purist). :fing32:

IF this engine ever has to come out I would probably switch back. I'm only a purist to a point. The conversion I think is rather cool, and matches all of my kohler powered Gravely's, so I always have spares on hand.

He is a huge JD fan. He is keeping those. I did get a 110 off of him this spring, but he has no plans to part with any more Deere's. I offered to get his 140 running for him for all he has done for me.

The 110 and Haban I got from him 6 months or so ago is my profile picture/avatar.
