Professional 12 Wheels Losing Power going Uphill

836 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  MIJacob
I have been happily using my gravely I bought for a couple years now, but have a lot of slopes in my yard. Recently, when I go up any reasonably sized incline, the wheels are losing power. It seems to be more pronounced in high gear. Any thoughts on what may be causing this, or what I am doing wrong in operation to cause this? Guessing I am stripping out a gear of some sort, but haven't opened it up.

Thanks

Jacob

If when you shift into either high or low, (the left handlebar) check to see if the spring on the actuator shaft is compressing, there is some adjustment with the jam nuts. That puts pressure on the high low clutch cup, the same is true for shifting into forward but that is a different clutch cup. If you have sufficient pressure on the levers and actuating shafts, then one of the clutch cups is probably worn.

Does the attachment speed also slow down when climbing? That would indicate a high/low clutch cup. If the tractor slows but the attachment maintains speed then suspect the forward/reverse clutch cup.

The high/low clutch cup replacement requires engine removal. The forward/reverse clutch cup replacement requires advance casting removal.

Is it definitely a transmission issue or maybe an engine power issue? If transmission then beaner2u has the answer. If an engine issue, check fuel flow from tank to carb/pump.
Clutch is out of adjustment, likely.

The attachment does not seem to be losing power or speed, only the wheels. I will play around with the forward reverse clutch adjustment and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the feedback folks!

Check the spring gap with a feeler gauge.

So adjusting the spring gap didn't do the trick. To confirm, you are talking about parts 37 and 59 in the parts list here?

Thanks for the feedback thus far.
