Well since i took home this old Troy horse and started to tear it down I got on the phone and called most of my small engine friends to see if they knew where any more may be sitting that I could pick up for parts etc
I didnot want any expensive running machines if possible and really was trying to find a good axle shaft and drive shaft for the old series one I had apart.

Well the boys stared to get back to me and i made a hit list with names and numbers and pretty much struck out on my 1st three visits. Yes the old tillers were still there sitting outside some for over 20 years but they were going to fix them
ya right
The 4th was a seriers 2, motor shot, but had the dozer blade, bush guard and what looked to be a fairly good set of tines installed. Problem was he was firm on $450 which was nuts to me for a non running machine

So off we went with the last of the list today not expecting too much

1st stop a score a series 2 serial number 315703 complete with a dry gear box but he wanted to keep the Kolar 7hp so I removed it and off I went with the rest
Next stop machine not for sale but a new set of bolo tines were so on the truck they went
Then a suprise another name given and when I opened the barn there was a pony. 1st one I have ever seen so a bit of haggling and on the truck it went

Now the best one. I had the original owners name and number on the owners manual that cane with the 1st one bought almost 40 years ago
What the **** I said I will give it a try. Well buddy almost crapped when I called and said it was like 25 years ago he sold the machine but there were still parts for it in his barn
Over I go and there is the rear hiller, a complete dozer blade and some strange pointed pick set with cast mounts that he said are for weeding

So all totaled it all cost me $250 for everything which I think was a good day:thThumbsU

Cheers

Those strange pick tines were the first tines Rototiller, Inc put on their Model T way back in 1949. Those tines are really good for rocky soil, but their drawback is they don't slice. They tend to collect weeds, grass, and roots. I did a flower bed one time and those tines found all the fine roots from a nearby maple tree.

Yes, sounds like the pick tines, manuals from the 70s showed them as an option (for rocky soil, as Charlie mentioned). Any idea why they stopped offering them?

Yep according to the owners manual I have they are pick tines and I also found out today after seeing them in the book he only gave me one side so I called him this morning and left a message. I would say the other size is still still there somewhere hanging complete on another rope. I hope so

Probably, convenience. The bolo tines does both and lasts longer. I had the pick tines on my Frazer Rototiller and every few years I had to replace them and they did not work well for chopping stuff in the garden. I had a set of the cultivating tines that I changed to after the initial tilling in the spring. Attached a photo from the T-B manual of the cultivating tines that they offered. These same tines and holders were used on the Rototiller tillers made through the 50's.

Well here is horse tiller No.2 all torn down and ready to be cleaned up and done over
Gearbox is in way better shape than the 1st one I have apart and just needs some seals
Also landed a brand new honda clone 6 1/2 HP today still in the box in a guys basement for the last 7 years.
Looks like I may have two troy working horses in the end of this. The second one one can tell has way less hours on it and other than sitting outside for god knows how many years came apart with just one broken bolt
Other than that *** left wheel again. Man this one I had to make up a pulling plate with 4 -3/8 bolts since it kept breaking bolts when two and three were used and a ton of heat
Oh well some holes to weld up in the rim but that is no big deal
Cheers

Thanks. It went up to 50 degrees here today with snow they say on Tuesday so I got at it early and put in a full day so Tiller No. 2 is just about done
All that is left is to put the new decals on it when they get here from the US, put in some gas and adjust the forward and reverse lever and add the new gearbox oil when I find it, install trottle cable
She is no show piece but looks OK and built to work
I think it will do that well. I hope :)
I will list what we did later. So still have No. 1 tiller to finish and that will be a while since the items I am short are sitting in West virginia and could be months before my brother ships them to me
Sorry for the different non factory colors but I wanted to use up the paint I had kicking around
Cheers
