I am using a borrowed John Deere 400 . It seems to be a good mower but the power steering has started acting up . It works fine for a few minutes after starting but then the steering effort greatly increases and the lift on the deck gets very slow. If I shut it off for a few minutes it steers great again but only for a couple minutes. I checked the fluid level and it looks ok.

I'm guessing the charge pump is weak. Fluid warms up and becomes thinner, slipping by the pump rather than being pushed through by the pump. It could also be the fluid and filter are in desparate need of change.

since you are borrowing this, i would call the owner and inform him immediately. you don't want to get blamed for what may well be his lack of maintenance!
