Finally went and picked up the tractor.

Here's a view of the home made chain drive:

I need some help IDing the transaxle. Here's the right side:

Is this the freewheel lever?

As mentioned in a previous post, the engine is stuck. I've taken the tractor over to a buddy's place, he's a semi-retired diesel mechanic, and loves to tinker with stuff on the side. He's going to see if the Wisconsin is worth saving. I mentioned that if it's not that I was thinking of putting in a small kubota diesel. Well, he tells me that where he works they have a pile of Isuzu D201 diesels from ThermoKing reefer trailers. Because of new EPA and California regs the engines had to be replaced with new low emission units. He's going to see what one would cost me. The D201 is a four cylinder 30 HP unit. There's plenty of room under the hood, so space wont be a problem.

No info on the tranny, but if you turn the tractor around on the trailer, that'll balance the tongue load better. The balance point on that tractor should be somewhere near the leading edge of the rear tires, depending on ballasting.

It sure looks like whoever built that tractor did a good job.
That would be great if you could get a diesel put in it.

Bob,
Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but we had a couple of extenuating circumstances.
The primary one was that the tractor was in the shed nose first, and there was no way we were going to be able to safely turn it around. The ground in front of the shed slopes away, and was covered in ice. Also, it is not readily apparent, but there is an additional engine in the bucket of the tractor. I was actually more concerned with the trailer whipping, since the ride home was approximately 90 miles at highway speeds (55-65 MPH). The plan was to drive a couple of miles and, if necessary, offload, reverse, and reload. It, however, trailered like a dream. There was virtually no deflection of the rear suspension on the truck, so I estimate the tongue load was no more than 200 pounds. In picture below, you can see that the rear end of the towing vehicle is at it's normal height.

That's my son Andrew, just for scaling purposes he's 6'1".

Thanks much guys! It is indeed from a New Holland/Ariens GT. I was able to find an identical unit on ebay. What I can't find though is any technical data showing how much power it is rated for. The tractor series I found was a s16, which used a Kohler K241 16 horse engine.

Yeah! Extenuating circumstances, indeed! Well done!

It looks good and should end up better with diesel power.

Not sure how much power it will handle , i know Ariens had a 20HP Kohler in thier tractors though.

Being it is a Hydro and will not be putting a strain on the rear like a clutch " shocking " the system , i would think it would be okay for 30HP ???

I thought of that too, but the Deere units have the filter attached to the transaxle, and they also have three piece rear axles, whereas this is a single piece unit.

Neat little tractor!! Heres an idea on the diesel option. What about a little Isuzu unit. Since California has outlawed the engines that ThermoKing reefer units use (C or D201's They should be plentiful. And they run forever. Just a thought.

Thanks for the kind words. You might have missed it, but at the very bottom of the original post I mentioned that my friend, who is a semi-retired diesel mechanic, told me they have a pile of old thermoking reefers that they are junking out. He's going to try to get me a good engine.

A hydro will only transmit the power that it's equipped to handle, provided that the engine can deliver that power. If the engine can deliver more power, that will only give marginally quicker acceleration and the rest goes to any powered implements.

My Husqvarna has a 20 hp engine powering a 7 hp hydro. The Vickers is a better unit that will handle more power and a bigger engine. It should be fine with the diesel.

Quick update. The day after I dropped it off at my friends place he had a major kidney stone and ended up in the hospital for two days. He's back home and feeling better, but restricted to only light physical activity. He did manage to disconnect the engine from both the transmission and hydraulic pump, and he thinks that something has come loose and wedged in the engine, since he can rock the crack back and forth.

Since he's been off work, there's no further word on the diesel availability.

After a lot of researching I figured out that he rear wheels and tires are from a self-propelled pivoting irrigation system. The second owner had modified them by torching out the 8 bolt portion of the wheel and welding on 5 bolt wheel halves. I want to find two decent 8X24 irrigation wheels, and then make two 5 to 8 bolt adapter plates. It shouldn't be too hard to find the wheels, I'm in the middle of farm country here in Wisconsin. Here' a closeup of one wheel.
