Picked Up another 990

I really did not need anymore tractors, but while I was searching for replacement front axles I found another 990 for sale within driving distance.

The owner originally wanted way to much money, but in the end was going to scrap it so I was able to get it for $75.

Before anyone jumps up and down and says what a great deal it was, you need to know this thing has been outside for a long time, and lots of stuff is missing, broken, rusted, or bent.

At best, it is a newer 990 without the 3 bolt front wheel spindle. The front wheels are the correct size, but are held on by cotter pins and the wheels have plastic bushing instead of roller bearings. It looks like these axles will not work with the older front axle that has the spindles, but in a pinch if I break something they might be able to get used just to put in and limp back to the shed. To me they look more like somebody hacked something together, but maybe it is when MTD decided to turn their tractors into the junk they have become.

Anyway, right now I am spraying the bolts down with WD40 and taking it apart to see what is till good.

Here is a picture of the sad beast...

The weather is sure hard on tractors that are left out side with out any protection. Good Luck with your 990
Man that thing is rough. At least you can use it to save others. That's better than seeing those parts get crushed.
Hey, it's worth $75. Which model is it? I can't tell from the picture but looks like there is a little Unico Green under the rust.
It was worth the $75, but it really is well worn.

Kingwood990, that is whay I thought, better I get to pick the bones then they just get trashed.
D-Dog, believe it or not, it is a Dayton, the green must be mold or some other thing growing on its cold dead body...
Good pickup. Dare I ask what this guy was originally asking for that thing?
ggsteve,

Would you believe $500.

Proof that people must be reading this forum and then start believing ther old junk in the back yard is made out of gold!

That's why I have a picture of olcowhand's Unico in the truck with a copy of the thread where he offered it for $750. That should realign most people's reality.

Are you going to part it out. If so i am interested in some parts. Help you break even.
for fun check to see how the engine is. see if it has compression and spark i doubt it does have spark but you never know engine could be saved.
Just by turning the engine over by hand, it seems like the compresion is pretty good when compared to my other 990's. I also checked the oil and it looks to be in good shape, no water or other ugly stuff in it.

I already took the starter generator off, so I am not sure about spark.

Right now, my guess is the engine is most likely in decent mechanical shape. I plan to take it out of the tractor and put it away to use for a spare, along with the hydro pump and rear.

You do realize you can rope start it, don't you?
Just a thought.

To be honest, I didn't even think about it... must be getting old ...

Thanks for the idea.
Considering selling off any pieces?
N8IWS,

I picked this one up because I have two other 990's that need parts.

At some point I will be willing to sell some stuff, but first I need to take this one apart and then I need to go through the two I have. This will take me a while.

If you need parts right now, believe halouska1 is parting out most of what was a running 990.

Pulled the rest of the sheet metal off today and underneath it looks like the hydro pump, rear, and other stuff are not in bad shape from what I can tell.

As it turns out, it looks like the front universal on one of the other 990's is broken and may have even messed up a drive shaft yoke, so I am glad I picked up this one for parts.
