There are usually 2 ways, but the manufacturers tag is missing from the left side of the dash tower.

The MF1855 uses a Sundstrand Series 15 inline type hydro that is square in shape with no cooling fins.

The Snapper 1855 uses an Eaton 11 hydro that is round in shape and has cooling fins.

That's the big brother to your 1600's. It's just missing a few incidental pieces.

Isn't snapper tags a sticker, and massey ferguson riveted?
I believe so. The tags on both of my MF1655's are riveted and I don't see any rivet holes.

That one has an Eaton hydro. It's a Snapper.

I see that the tractor serial-tag has been removed (I have the same problem. So I had to scrap the wheel paint a bit to ID. MF1855) (the tag was right above near the brake pedal. You should still be able to see the remaining 2 holes for that on the left shielding)

From the wheels colour on yours, it's a Snapper. (MF is grey. Snapper is white'ish-beige)

Now, as for a 1655 or 1855, you'll have to ID the axle. 1855 have the axle for 18HP to 20HP (Eaton). While the 1655 goes to no more than 18HP(Sundstrand).

hope that helps ;)

All of the hydro tractors in this series (1450/1650/1655/1855) used the Peerless 2500 final drive whether Massey Ferguson badged or the later Snapper badged units, whether there was an Eaton or a Sundstrand hydro bolted to them. Snapper units used Eatons, while early MF models 1450 and 1650 used Sundstrands and switched to Eatons later in the production run. The MF1655 and 1855 used only Sundstrands.

The defining difference in final drive capability is not horsepower handling, but torque handling. It takes a large trailer with a heavy payload measured in tons to tax the engines on any of these tractors. It takes less than a ton of rear end ballast for the Sundstrand hydros to tax the 1250 lb-ft of torque capability of the final drives to the breaking point.

Of the two hydros, the Sundstrand is actually the stronger due to a higher maximum pressure rating. Both hydros are closely matched at the pressures normally generated by GTs.

Thx! I should have included in my post "This is as far and the best that I know about those" ;)

I have mine since August this year. I'm struggling with its engine "puking" oil from the breathers. So last week, I converted a vertical oppy-twin 19.5HP B&S into an horizontal with the dressing of the 18HP it had. Took me 20hrs. Ran to perfection for 4hrs, than started to puke oil from breather #1 (piston/cylinder #1) to a rate like 1Tbsp/min, while the older engine was puking that same in 30mins from both breather.

So I guess it'll be "ring"time whenever I'm able.

One other thing I'd like to ask.....

Does anything like transmission/hydro "jam/stalling" has ever happen on yours. That can happen either cold and hot. When that happen, I have to slightly press on the pedal until I hear a single small "click" under the seat, then it is ok to go ahead/backward. Otherwise, if I do press hard, as "to go", it seems like h-ll is turning tight to explode and almost stall the engine (!?).

thx

I've had my MF1655 since 1982. That's given me just a wee bit more time to figure out questions and research answers. :fing32:

Your "jam/stalling" situation is new to me. I don't see such an issue occurring in a Sundstrand hydro and would focus my attention on the final drive. The Eaton hydro I am not as familiar with. :hide:

Check the drive shaft and universal for binding.

Thx

I'm hoping it is only a final-drive issue. The previous owner had a "downhill panik attack" once and desperately tried to put it back in-gear with 1500Lbs load in the back trailer.
So my guess is there's has to be a gear with damaged denture lol ;) I always hold the shifter when going downhill. I have not yet done any serious hauling with it and try to keep it easy on this one. As for metal particles in the axle, I'm maybe over-confident that the magnetic-plug can keep them at bay. I was hoping to change its oil as soon as I got this tractor here, but took me some time to figure what oil, and when found, at one of the machine-shop here town, decided to wait till some more cash comes my way ($16/litre). And I still can't get a good readable manuals. All I have is cheap scan from the net (Snapper, though I believe, but not really sure, there the exact same) Found a MF1855/1655 manual on eBay and waiting for a friend of mine to order it as I do not have credit nor card.

I was hopping for the engine to hold. Did a carb clean-up for it to run a bit better. My next and main concern was the drive train and oil. Then things went haywire.... and now I don't know where to start anymore... I hate it when I have to chasse 56 rabbits at the same time ;)

Focus. Focus. Focus! Deal with one rabbit at a time. First the engine, second the transmission, third the steering. That sort of corrals the rest of the rabbits and you can catch them a lot easier.

Well, for now it will rest for this winter, unless something good comes up ;)
Just made a stand over the ditch behind the shed with pallet and scrap wood-planks loosely spread over the pallets. It will keep company with Jacobsen ;) Just put it there yesterday late afternoon.
