I have a bit of a problem. I have this bricktop I got cheap it had compression and spark so I got it running pretty smooth and had it running for about 10 or 15 minutes and then my better half came over and started pushing on the governor to speed up the engine and it started missing real bad so I shut it off. Now when I try to start it and now it knocks and won't stay running. It's a D model engine so I was thinking I could swap some parts out with a D404 that I have setting around. The bricktop might be a D430 but not for sure only had the engine. Will the parts swap and if so which ones would I have to swap out?

hmm,
wondering if the gov. got bent&is dragging inside......, does the knock sound like it was from the cylinder?......did it chug on start or rev real high?
hoping for ya no swap is needed.......

Well it's hard to describe. It's sound like it's coming from inside the block not the piston area. I don't think the rod was hurt it does move up and down correct I believe. I was thinking the rod bearing are gone or something like that. I guess it kind of clugs and knocks at the same time for about 3 or 5 seconds and then stops running.

Yes the short block is the same for the 404 and 430. They both have the 3 ring piston with the solid wristpin bearings. I am not sure about the mag plate though with a little research through the parts catalogue I am sure we could find out.

Yeah the mag plates have the same part number. The difference is the 404 is a varible speed and the 430 is fixed at 3200, so basically the only parts that are not interchangeable are the governor spring, fuel tank and shrouds and attaching hardware, and maybe carb. If you have questions just go to www.partstree and punch in models numbers 3054 and 5235 and you can compare piece by piece.

Thanks that excellent information. The 404 has been setting around for 20plus years so I don't know how good it might be. It does turn over, but I was thinking or hoping for something easy like pulling out the rod bearing and exchanging them or maybe the rod and the bearing. I can't do a compression test on the 404 right now because I can't get the crank starter to work right to do a test.
