Well I promised to take lots of pictures, & as time permits I will. My new Briggs 18hp. re-power arrived this evening by truck line (see picture below!), & I doubt I will actually have time to start installing the new engine untill this weekend, due to my work schedule. I promise I will keep plenty of pictures a coming, even for the nay-sayers, who don't believe in re-powering.

very nice
that should last a long time.
Well glad to see that you're keeping the 318 and repowering it. Going to have to get the green paint out though and get rid of that non-JD paint scheme on the engine!

Take off that red cover rough it up with some sand paper a shot of primer and a couple of coats of JD green and you're good to go.
Good luck! :fing32:

Agreed :trink39: I painted my repower engine's cover ASAP.
Looks like fun. I agree, paint that engine cover either green or black!
I lookl forward to the process of the transplant.Good Luck:thThumbsU
Well, you have my support! (which is worth nothing:D) But you still have it! Engine looks great, all clean and tidy, and probably weighs half what the Onan does. You're gonna have a brand spankin new awesome 318 when you're done! :thThumbsU
Why paint the red??? The color lets everyone know

Personally, I think the red is downright sexy.
Losing the red paint is a must!! That will be 1 sweet runnin 318 when your done. Congrats.
That's a good looking engine! I will be watching and thanks for the pics I'm with you 100% on the repower. :trink39:
Looks good :fing32: Good luck on the install and I'm looking forward to the finished product.
That's a good looking motor and should provide great service. Painting it green could look cool too. Lots of pictures please. Never know when another member may need them.
I would paint it yellow nice contrast with green..My .02 cents
In the photo below the truck is that a threaded adapter for the driveshaft? Also, it came with a brand new PTO?
have two vangaurd they are great engine lots of power and run very smooth and are great work horse
Excellent. Can't wait to see more. I painted my Vanguard engine cover green, exhaust shield black and the muffler with gray exhaust paint. Looks awesome and it still looks as good as day one - two years later.

Yeah, that is a threaded adapter for the driveshaft & it came already fastened as seen to the crank. In fact all of the pictures were taken immediately after I lifted it out of the box & up onto the work bence. The shipping weight was 124 lbs., which included the pto that came with it, & the belt. I am sure that "coldwater" is going to grab hold of that when he reads the weight, but then again maybe he doesn't know what an 18hp Onan weighs? Perhaps it's because of all the titanium parts in a Briggs that make it weigh less than the great amount of slag that is cast into some other engines.
I wasn't going to pull the red cover as it has so many connectors on it & it has the fresh paint, not to mention that I hate the thought of spraying paint on something that I just paid so much for. Problem is, I know that it would look better painted another color than red. I think I am going to paint it J/D green. Thanks for all of the input.

esnm74; I did not see the pictures of your Vanguard twin painted up green, until after I just posted. Yours is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, & that does it, I am definately going to paint mine green before I drop the engine in! I thank you for the pictures, as you have saved me from a lot of furture regrets for not having painted it. Once that engine is in, I do not plan on taking it back out. Thanks again.
