Hey guys I am shopping for a cub cadet to restore and cut grass with and ran across this one. Do you guys think it is worth 300 bucks and a 4 hour drive or should I keep looking. It is in the correct age range I was intrested I am going to include the email the fellow sent to me along with the pictures. Thanks Aaron

How old are you looking for?I have an early 60's model "Original" that I'm just not gonna get around to fixin up. Has mower deck and is complete but doesn't run. Will need a complete going thru.I've got $300 in it so that's what I'd need back. I can throw in some new front tires I bought for it too.Can send pics if interested.

IMO... It is not worth $300. I just go out bid on an "Original" last weekend. It was in better shape and more complete and it had the really, really rare "creeper gear" and PTO". I stoped at $350 and it sold for $375.
If you were just looking for something to mow with, I'd look for a 149 or a 82 series with a hydro transmission.
i would do 300 on that all day. simple engines to work on, decks are hard to find, and thats a 1961 (first year of production) which means in all likely hood its a low serial number, which adds to its value
Eh, a bit pricey for me, if you wait long enough chances are you can come across one cheaper. There was an original on craigslist near me on Monday for $125 without a deck.
It would be worth 300 if you wanted to restore it, but I wouldn't buy it to mow with.
$300.00 is a little high but it does appear to be from the 1961 model year.

The wheel weights alone are worth $125.00 and Original mower decks are getting harder to find all the time... Especially if that one is as good as it looks, although I'm not sure that the "ski" around the deck discharge is factory and I don't/can't see the cogged belt that drives the blade spindles (not saying it's not there I just can't see it (they're about $45.00 for a new one)).

Hard to tell from the pictures but something doesn't quite look right with the starter/generator. It's possible that the S/G turns the wrong way and that's why the engine doesn't run.

Not sure how much more "complete" it needs to be, it looks to me like everything is there (with the exception of the afore mentioned deck belt) some parts don't appear to be in the best condition but everything appears to be there. (If you're looking for something that is perfect then go spend 2 grand for a new one that will last four or five years and then you can throw it away.)

If you don't have a huge yard, an Original is a very good mower to cut grass with, but you don't want to let the grass get too overgrown before you mow.

If the engine turns over (not locked up), if it rolls freely when not in gear, if it feels like it goes into each gear as it should and if you are willing to hope for the best and expect the worst and put the time and money into it, that looks like a very good candidate to restore.

BTW, Originals have a great deal of "cool factor" and they are about the most fun of all the IH built Cub Cadets to drive.

I did some calling around and one guy who has a cc junkyard kinda told me he has several that are mostly complete and he wants from 300 to 450 depending on model and condition. Another guy contacted me with a 72 with a slung rod busted block for 200.
Seems like 300ish is the going price for a complete non running CC in my area. I am going to go check out the guy that has the junkyard this weekend and see what he has. I really want something bigger than the O or 72 because I have some hairy grass to cut and I would like to use it to work our little garden with one day. I want to work it but I also intend on restoring it and keeping it looking good as well.

I restored a 64 JD 110 RF and use it every week for something except winter. The older ones are fun to use and admire. I've had a lot of people slow down and give it a second look when I'm out using it. Just remember when you get done doing a total restore on it you'll most likely never get your money out of it. So plan on keeping it and enjoy it. slkpk

Location is key for the pricing of cubs.

esnb74,
That was a STEAL for O with creeper and rear pto. I would of paid double that for it. I really don't see a need for rear pto but it is cool.

aarolar,
200 to 300 for a complete non running is about right. About the 4 hour drive I'm not sure about.

Here was my last puchase off of CL real CHEAP!!! New engine fenders and deck. The drive cup broke and the guy stopped driving it. Yesterday I got it running. Other problems fixed but the engine still ahs the clean oil form the rebuild. The cup must of broke soon after the rebuild.

AAROLER,

I'm not sure what part of Georgia you're in, but if Nashville, TN or Knoxville, TN are close enough for you, I would watch them on craigslist. That is where i picked mine up at, and the supply in those areas seem to be much higher than in Georgia. Also, be sure to keep an eye on the Georgia Market Bulletin. People put cubs on there all the time:

That "O" is a early one. If you look at the front spindles, it has the locking collars instead of the bolts.

300.00 is about right no matter what market you are in(unless you live next to a guy with ten acres of them). if the motor is loose, and trans is solid in all gears...go for it, you'll not be disappointed. i've had 3,all with creepers, and have loved what they will do. the one i have now, i just bought at a local farm machinery auction for $100.00, with creeper, no deck, and one blown original rear. i put $10.00 in the carb,a new battery, and fluid filled ags on the rear(which i already had), and am in heaven again!!!! the memories of what i have done with one of these are well worth $300.00...........

Don't feel ripped off. You paid going rates....an it looks all there. As well as Hugh mentioned, it's a 61'.....so you did fine.
We have chassis with seized engines and frozen transmissions selling for more than that up here.
You did alright, now get busy and refurbish that old girl!! Just make sure everything is smooth and ready before you try and mow with that mower deck. Make sure the blades are timed correctly and ALL bearings are smooth or you will have issues. The engine is simple to work on and parts are available. Keep us updated on your progress. Mike
