Yanmar is a Japanese diesel engine manufacturer founded in Osaka, Japan in 1912.. Yanmar manufactures and sells engines used in a wide range of applications, including seagoing vessels, pleasure boats, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, and generator sets. It also manufactures and sells ag equipment, construction equipment, climate control systems, aquafarming systems, in addition to providing a range of remote monitoring services. In 2014 Yanmar America first introduced the SA Series Tractors.

Yanmar has been producing diesel engines since 1933. As for today, manufactured over 15 million diesel engines ranging from 4.5 to 5,000 horsepower. Currently, more than one million Yanmar diesel engines are powering North America’s leading-edge mobile and stationary off-highway equipment. From construction equipment, generator sets, pressure washers, and turf equipment to military applications and agricultural equipment, Yanmar America is proud to be the leading compact diesel power that helps America and the rest of the world works.

Some Yanmar Diesel Engines history:

1912: Founded as YAMAOKA HATSUDOKI KOSAKUSHO, starting production with gas engines.
1933: The HB model, the world’s first commercially viable small diesel engine was launched.
1938: Awarded for research into internal combustion engines by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.
1955: Awarded the Diesel Gold Medal by the German Inventors Association.
1968: Awarded the Deming Prize.
1981: 5 millionth horizontal water-cooled diesel engine produced.
1981: YANMAR Diesel America Corp. established in Chicago, IL.
1983: World’s smallest air cooled diesel engine developed.
1984: YANMAR Diesel Engine (U.S.A.) established in Anaheim, CA.
1992: 10 millionth diesel engine produced.
1992: ISO9001 certification for all business operations.
1992: YANMAR Diesel America Corp. and YANMAR Diesel Engine (U.S.A) Inc. merged into YANMAR Diesel America Corp. YANMAR U.S.A., Inc. was established in IL as the holding company of YANMAR Diesel America Corp.
1997: ISO14001 certification for all plants.

Since creating the world’s first practical compact diesel engine, Yanmar has been at the forefront of the evolution of diesel engines. Environmental performance is no exception.
Commencing in 2013, Tier 4 (19 ≦ kW < 56) is the fourth stage of emissions standards set by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Compared to stage 3 it was a significant regulatory tightening, being referred to amongst some in the field as requiring emissions to be "cleaner than the air we breathe". The only way for engineers to succeed in meeting Tier 4 standards was an unhesitating willingness to venture into unchartered territory.

Since diesel engines burn fuel for power, it is not possible to achieve zero emissions. As a company they accepted the challenge, to bring exhaust emissions down to Tier 4 compliant levels while providing reassurance for customers.

With previous diesel engines, the focus was on the mechanical work done by the engine. However, the most important characteristic of Yanmar Tier 4 compliant engines are the electronic control systems. Electronic control has been closely integrated into the engine and the difference is much greater than it first appears. To produce this engine, both the design and the production method of the engine had to be altered. It is no exaggeration to say they been created a new diesel engine: a diesel engine for the future.

The diesel engine of tomorrow is in the making today. These innovations aren't limited to the engine's electronic control unit and R&D, but extend to other areas as well, such as a complete revamp of the production lines that make the engines.

The road to success isn't always straight forward, but our Fundamental Principle of "to conserve fuel is to serve mankind" provided a compass to keep us moving in the right direction. Combining innovative technology and determination as a diesel engine maker, Yanmar's was the first engine to be certified by CARB (California Air Resources Board) for full compliance of Tier 4 standards.
This was followed by U.S. EPA Tier 4 certification, and now the engine is receiving high praise from customers all over the world.

Yanmar manufactures 3 types of engines:
  • Vertical Water-cooled Diesel Engines
  • Air-cooled Diesel Engines
  • Horizontal water-cooled diesel engine
