Old MTD Front Tine Repower

8825 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jcgrandpa14
This tiller has been sitting up in the wood shop for almost 10 years now.. Going to repower it in the next couple days.. It's an MTD Front tine with a Briggs 5hp. It's branded a Longlife Gold Star 5 with forward and reverse tine directions. Went by the hardware store to pick up a few bolts and shims this morning. Going to give it a good cleaning, no paint, change out the oil, and go till a late in the year garden.

The repower is a Harbor Freight Predator 212cc Horzi 3/4 engine. It was only $105 after 20% coupon. I used one of these on a Horse I not long ago and was happy with results.

Sorry for the poor pics, Better ones soon.

I've got the motor mounted, all the belts and linkages reconnected, Transaxle fluid changed, Engine Oiled and Gased up. Unfortunately I need one more bolt so I won't be able to start it up until tomorrow after work.

Still needs to be cleaned..

Sixgun,
Looks good, and good choice for repower. I have a Simplicity Roticul, that I repowered 3 years ago with a H/F engine (the blue ones) 6 1/2 horsepower. If everything happens for you as it did for me, you will love the results.
Thanks Rossa.

Got the tiller up and running, made a small 4x6 plot to put the plants I've started. This is my second garden so bit clueless.. Anxious to see how it turns out.. Will be pulling the remaining grass up once I get the opportunity.

Sixgun, I have the same longlife (otasco) tiller, but I can't look up parts because my model number tag is torn off, below & behind the motor on the right hand side. I'd sure appreciate if you could tell me the full model number on yours. Good old tiller but the worm gear drive stripped out when I used it last. Thanks

Sorry new here thanks
If your tiller is like the original posters, then you should be able to get a belt path from the first couple of posts in this thread. And you can also tell that the V part of the belt goes into a pulley with a V, while the back of the belt will run on a flat pulley.

As for belt length, you can use a rope around pulleys in the right path, then get a belt with that I.D. (or perhaps a little longer). You may need to buy/exchange the belt a few times to get the right length.
