I have a little 2-stroke weedwhacker. It's very basic, curved shaft, no clutch. Sometimes I will trim "delicate" areas with the engine at idle, so the lower string speed doesn't cause as much damage if I hit something I shouldn't. I use full throttle for heavier weeds, etc.

I'm looking around on Craigslist for something better. Probably a 2-stroke, looking for straight shaft. It will most likely have a clutch.

If it has a clutch, is it still OK to do light trimming at less than full throttle? I wouldn't want to make the clutch slip without realizing it, and burn it up. A chainsaw also has a throttle and a centrifugal clutch, but you're never supposed to cut at less than full throttle.

As long as the clutch isnt slipping, should be fine at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. A good brand, like Echo, stihl, etc..will have a good clutch that will grab hard and stay locked. Less brands, like ryobi and troy bilt,...have lesser clutches that easily slip, and will overheat.
