I picked up this 4-cycle GTS Toro for next to nothing. Cleaned all the wet, soggy, air filter debris out of the air box and the carb, cleaned the carb, and it fired right up, easily. Runs well on full choke--for a while, but won't run at all, off of full choke.

Didn't take long to see a pretty good flow of oil from the crankcase into the air box and then down to the carb intake. The parts diagram looks like there is a reed valve that feeds that hose to the airbox, but I can't tell for sure. Is it likely that's the problem? Get to it by removing flywheel??

Here's a pic of the hose, just above the fuel line.

Thanks!

Still trying to figure this problem out--on 2 similar vintage Toro's.

Have removed flywheels and looked at reed valves. Don't REALLY know what I'm looking for, but neither of them looked obviously bad.

Could use some thoughts from those that DO know what to look for. :)

Thanks!

The reed valve works to keep the crankcase in a slight vacuum. Any leak suck as oil fill tube or dipstick that upsets this vacuum will cause oil to push out past the reed valve. Could also be rings worn out. Look for the easy things first. When the piston goes up in the bore, the reed valve should seal and a vacuum will be created in the crankcase, Then when it comes back down the vacuum will go back to close to no pressure. If there is a crankcase leak that won't let the vacuum happen it will build up pressure and push oil out past the reed valve.

I appreciate the explanation of how this is supposed to work! The question is--how do I go about actually looking for whether the reed valve is sealing, or if there are leaks elsewhere?
Thanks!
