Not a good day in the valley :(

Ok so we finally got about 12 to 14 inches of snow which means lots of seat time :trink40:
The old sears gets fired up and runs like a piece of crap:banghead3:banghead3
It will start right up but its flooding really bad and I am assuming that its the original float that might be giving me all the problems.
I am going to have to find a brass one and get it installed right away.
Where is the best place to find one? ( and fast ) Is there a part number and maybe I can find one locally:fing32:

Anyway back to the snow...which will be no problem as I will just use the JD with the blower, well about three passes up the driveway and the tensioner pulley broke :crybaby: It doesn't look like a cheap part and will probably need to be ordered...........how was your day

Here is the results page for a brass onan float on ebay, I gave you all of the choices cause Im not sure who ships to CA and who doesnt.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...kw=onan+brass+float&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Thanks Hugh :)
I am going to try this part number { 146-0380 B } around here first and see if they can get /have one. I might just get lucky...
I haven't taken it apart but I am 99% sure it will have the original fiber float?
Since its mega-low hours, Im guessing it will. If you local small engine guy cant get it, go to a Cummins dealer
Yes I will, just checked one on Ebay and its $23. just to ship ....:banghead3:banghead3 Nothing like taking advantage of someone
make sure bowl vent is not blocked(dirt dobbers)
Try someplace like an RV dealership that has generators. They used Onans for years in RV's. Good luck!

Bowl vent ? would that be the little hole in the top next to the 3 screws that hold the breather on ?
That sucks!
The good news is I got the tension pull for the JD and it was only $10 bucks :)
The bad news is that no shop I went to could find the # or cross reference it for the float ....:( I have one shop that is checking with his supplier to see about it and a price.
Is there a different part number ?
try an outfit called "garys place" he is in michigan i think, I got the brass float and fuelpump, gaskets and what not from him a year or so ago to fix my 18/6 onan.Google it, easy to use website and you'll likley find the float you need and he will mail it to you, fairly cheap if i recall. worked out good for me and when my tractor is down and i need it, $20.00 is no concern. I hate shoveling. Good luck

Thanks cranky :) I have already been in contact with him and he does have it and will mail it out to me , I am just trying to find one local first to save on down time. I would imagine it would be 2 or 3 weeks before I got it from him?

JD is back up and running so no shoveling for me :) even it if it wasn't I just use 4 wheel drive to get in and out of the driveway :bananapow:bananapow:bananapow

Anyone ever heard of a temporary (emergency) fix for a float? Something like drying it out with a hair dryer then coating it in something to keep it from absorbing gas? Maybe a thin smear of JB weld? Just a thought, but it might get you by in a pinch...
I have soldered a few brass floats, after enlarging the hole so the gas in it could evaporate first...on a cork one,I tried using "Seal-All" smeared on it to seal up the porus cork and it worked temporarily, but it started flooding a few days later....possibly the weight of the sealer made it too heavy,I'm not sure....
I ended up finding a brass loat from a different carb that was close enough to work,so I used that, instead of trying to find another "correct" float for it...I think cork swells up when the engine heats up,and it ends up rubbing against the float bowl ,because most of the troubles I had with cork floats started after the engine was fully warmed up..it also absorbs gas after it gets old and they "sink"....

I have thought about trying a temp. fix but couldn't come up with any ideas :(
I just can't believe that this float would only last 36 years.....guess they don't make them like they use to ...lol
brass float on my 1970 mtd failed in december. idk if it was original or not but still it was not new at all.
how about gas line antifreeze ice partical from sweeting
how about gas line antifreeze ice partical from sweeting
I tried that first and no luck, I have just noticed the last couple of times I used it that it was getting a little worse each time.
The float in your MTD is way different than the Onan one. I have had mine for 1.5 years and my carb is so much better with it
