Just bought this mower in May '09. I only have 24hrs on it. After it is started with brake pushed in, full power, pto off, when I release the brake I hear a grinding noise underneath. The mower still cuts good and operates normally. I had a similar problem with an old Murray and it turned out to be a worn drive gear. Anyone have/had a similar problem and a fix?

trev, when you release the brake, the drive belt engages and turns the hydro-static motor. How does it sound when you release the brake & you're idling? Or when you release the brake in a slow controlled fashion?

You need to take it back to where ever you purchased it while it is still in warranty and get it repaired.

Even at a idle you can hear the noise beginning almost as soon as you begin releasing the brake pedal. I did contact the seller and he said that CC "used to" have this problem but thought it had been resolved. He will contact CC and then "let me know."

I found the rear idler pulley bad. It looked old and discolored (not from grass) and sounded like the bearings were square (really suspicious). Dealer replaced. No charge of course. Thanks for all responses.

It's good to hear you found the problem and the dealer took care of it. Hope you don't have any more problems.
