Hey guys, I just picked up my first Cub Cadet today. It is a 106. I dont know much about it. It ran when it was parked, and has been sitting for about 3 years.
I dont know if it runs, because it dont have a key in it. I will start working on it tomorrow.
Its got a pump thing under the seat, What is it?
Also, tell me about the box on the back. Is it original?

Welcome to the yellow side :trink39:

Your 106 is a 10 hp Kohler, and I see you have the IH weight box on the back. That's a nice item to have. :fing32:

Need any on line manuals?
That looks to be an IH made utility box. The pump kinda has me at a loss though. It is not original at all. Is it bolted down or plumbed into anything ? Just wondering if it just looked like a good place to store to someone.

Allright! Nice IH Cub Cadet 106! Welcome to the Cub Cadet forum:fing32:! -peace
That's a beaut, my favorite Cub "body style." If you need them, check with Tulsa Engine Warehouse for an air filter, points, plug and condenser. You'll save a chunk. Do you know how to bypass the key to see if it runs? Here's a question for the group: Why does every Cub you see have decent paint on the rear wheels and completely rusted out fronts? I mean, every old Cub that we drag in has this in common.

Nice to see another 106 Owner On the forum Here is My 106
It has Been My work horse I have had it since 2003 It was Originally a Manual Lift and I changed it to a OEM electric Lift . The 106 was the Most Popular 3speed Gear Model of IH Cub Cadet Series 5 16,635 106's were Produced It actually outsold the 147 by 967 units The Only tractor More Popular that the 106 In series 5 was the Hydrostatic 127 which had 25,485 units Made. When I Bought my 106 it came with a QA36A snow thrower and a 5hp Peco Bagger I Only really added the electric Lift and The IH 3point with Briny sleeve hitch adapter. The 106 could Take a 515RPM rear PTO. Heck it could even take a Front end Loader. The Compartment Under the seat was Marketed as a Tool Box Once Series 6 came Out the first Of the Wide Frames The Tool Box Became the Battery Box. The Ballast Box You Have on the Back was a Extra attachment:thThumbsU

Nice find! As for the device under the seat, I'm with the others - it doesn't look to be a factory component. Looks almost like a winch, but I don't see any winch cable anywhere.
Looks like a nic beast of a tractor WV Sears!:thThumbsU

As far as the unit under the seat goes it looks to be some sort of electric pump due to the 3/8" or 1/2" nipple & plug on the right side. Look around adn see if there is another pipe / or fitting on the head to verify the entry and outlet of the thing.

It can be a hydraulic pump to be used as an implement or plow lift or...

It could just be some sort of water pump for something like fertilizer or weed killer sprayer for all I know.. Just my guess on that thing.. I'm sure someone else will chime in.. :goodl::trink39:

Its not a winch, it is some sort of electric powered pump.

.
let me rephrase that, your 106 originally came with a 10 hp Kohler. The 12 hp K-301A is a direct bolt in ( and a welcome upgrade too )

If the battery is charged, run a jumper from the coil [+] to the battery [+], then a jumper from the battery [+] to the starter/gen [+], which should be the larger, outboard terminal. On my 147, the battery was too weak to push power through the large gauge jumper cables, and it was much easier to jump the tractor this way but off of a car battery. So the black cable went [-] to ground on the chassis and then I touched the red cable [+] to the starter gen [+] terminal.

Confusing write-up, but I hope you can get it.

if you put power from the battery to the + side of the coil (hot wire) then put jumpers on the starter generator, you will be able to get it to crank over and theoretically start.
Thanks guys, I'll give it a try.
I got the cub cadet running, she runs great. Thanks everyone for all of the help. Now for the next problem, I jumped on it to take it for a drive, pushed down on the clutch, put it in gear (1st). It jumped forward, with the clutch still pushed down. So I let off of the clutch and pushed down on it again, nothing happened, the tractor is still crawling around in first gear. So I turned it off, and got off.
How do I free up the clutch after sitting for 3 years?

Got any good hills on your property? I replaced my throw out bushing on my 122 and made it a tad too tight. I put it in 3rd gear, kept the clutch in and came up to a good "hill" on my lawn. That gave enough resistance to give me the extra clearance I needed.

Before you try that, Make sure the clutch plate is stuck fast. A putty knife works well :fing32:
