Hello I just bought a used LT1500 (I think) model number 917-273811 18.5 hp, 42" mower tractor. It came with a plow blade, chains and wheel weights installed. I tried putting on the chains but they keep popping off. I took the chains to a tractor repair location and they told me the end links of the chains have to be bent to secure them. I put them back on the tire and could barely bend the L shape end on one chain to secure it. The other chain has bent hooks already. What can you suggest is the problem?

Also I want to remove the mower deck and was wondering are there any simplified directions/pictures available to show the process?

Thanks

Don't need to bend nutin'. On one end, there should be an 'S' shaped hook on one chain and a hookie thingie on the other chain. On the other end on the chain, should be no hooks, just empty links.
Position chain around tire, with the figure 'S' hook on the inside, secure that 'S' hook to an empty link at the end of the same chain.
The hookie thingie is fed thru an empty link on the other end, and turned back on itself, and hooks onto the chain. Fidling with both the "S" shaped hook (inside) and the 'thingie' (outside) will tighten the chains up. There are also some tricks.
Using the search button (upper right) search for snow chains or putting on chains for better info. It's been discussed in length on here. Even on 'youtube'.

Hey Bob I really appreciate the link. I found out what I needed to really secure the chains problem is I thought they were junk and planned on buying new ones so now I can't find one of them. I called Sears and after being given the runaround found out that new ones have to be ordered (7 days+). I did get one on really snug so hopefully when the snow melts in the next few days I can find the other chain!

Also I figured out how to remove the mower deck too. I was told to keep it on for weight but with the snow being so deep I didn't want to damage it so pulled all the cotter pins I could see and disconnected a spring and away it rolled. Hopefully I did it right :)

Thanks I figured it out after reading the link. Oops I forgot to check youtube for the chains so maybe I could have saved everyone some trouble explaining. I did search it for removing the mower deck and couldn't find anyting there except one for a John Deere.

On the chain that is missing the coupling ends had one hook and another one with a L bend. I was trying to bend the L to a J after talking to the repair shop. Is it okay to have a L?

On the long coupling link, the "L" should be able to latch onto a link. The short leg of the "L" should look like a "U".

As a rule, mowers are wider than blowers and plows. You really don't want them on in the winter. Load the tires for extra weight and keep them loaded. That'll help in the summer as well.
