Hi! I spent the better part of the night browsing the Snapper forum last night looking for some answers to my problem but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I've got a Snapper RER, 28108BE, Hi Vac. Just bought it used the other day, and don't know anything about them. Can't find a manual from snapper.com and I tried to contact them through the website but haven't heard back yet.

There are cables for a battery although after jump-starting it with my car once, I haven't had a need for one since it starts on the second pull most of the time. It ran really good the first time out, no smoke, and it cut great! I guess I got a little carried away with it and tried to take it off the beaten path and do some cutting on a really rough section of land. I got hung up in a rut and after some work finally worked my way out. Since then, the tractor seems to have really lost some power in the forward gears, if I'm on any kind of incline it doesn't want to go. Reverse however is still very strong.

Anyways, from reading some of the posts I understand that it may be related to that rubber band thing on the wheel (excuse me, not much of a mechanic but I am a fast learner!). If that's the case, how do I replace it, where can I find what I need? Where can I find a manual?

Sounds like you need to either
A -- Adjust the drive pulley or more likely B -- replace the drive disk. They are 10 bucks or less at the Snapper dealer. You will most likely need the one with the lining on the inside for the smooth clutch.

I'm suprised your manual wasn't on Snapper.com. I looked again and it wasn't there. I put in my 3 model numbers and came up with absolutely nothing! That sux big time. Briggs is really messing with them since buying them.

I just had the same problem with mine. Lift the mower by the front and stand it up on its end on the metal bars on the back; it's designed so you can stand it up that way to work on it. Locate the rubber drive wheel and carefully unbolt the 4 bolts in the center. If it is the smooth start it will have a fiber disc in there also between the plate and the rubber/metal drive wheel, as well as the brake band on the inside of the wheel, mentioned in the previous post above. Remove these and take to your dealer, and get the new drive wheel and new fiber disc. Reassemble and see if that works. Hint: if the rubber is only barely worn, you may have another issue.

Thanks for the replies, the rubber is definitely worn. A couple places have pieces missing. I think I will be able to change that, I've got a Snapper dealer located pretty close to me that should be able to hook me up with the part.

I want to change the oil in the tractor because I suspect it's never been done. What kind of oil do I use? Any idea how much I should put in? How do I drain the old stuff? I was also planning on changing the air filter, I had read somewhere to lightly coat the air filter with oil before i put it in is this true?

Sorry for the simple questions but I gotta start somewhere right? It would be so much easier if I could find a manual. Maybe I might have some luck finding a manual for the Briggs motor at least.

Not sure on how much to put in exactly. If you have a dipstick fill it until it hits the full mark. Then run it a bit then check it again. There is a drain plug on the back of the engine towards the back of the mower. Simply pull it and drain into a pan. I took my engines and put a 3/8 inch pipe and a right angle elbow on it so it isn't so messy!

As for the air filter depends on the filter. If it has the foam one then yes. If it's paper then no. It could have a combination. The package that the air filter comes in will give you the best information.

When pulling the disk off they make a special tool. I don't have one so I use a screwdriver wedged correctly to loosen the bolts. It's hard to explain but you should be able to figure it out. I can change one in about 15 minutes.

I use 30wt oil in my Snappers.

tcanthonyii is right, virtually all lawn mower engines use regular 30 wt. oil, not multi-weights like 10W 30, unless you have climate extremes.

Almost mowing season! Getting ready to tune up the rider, and finally getting around to replacing that rubber disk. I checked out snapper.com and my model is on there now!

Mark: welcome, which manuals do you need? There are parts,which is helpful in that it shows how parts relate to each other. The owners which has minor maintenance instructions,and safety notices and the service manual,which is the hard to find one. The only service manual that I have been able to find is one for "model 6 and later" this should work fine for your model 8,it's part # 07012 and printed 1988. The Snapper site should have the first two and possably an engine manual too.someone may have the service manual posted on this site,if not PM me.

Well, I finally changed my drive disk and MAN what a difference! That sucker is popping wheelies now if I let it. Thanks again for all the help!
