I happened to be doing my daily surf of Craigslist a week and a half ago and there was a listing with 3 mowers, 2 JDs and a Scotts. However, there was one that was not like the rest. I've seen a few JDs built by Lawn-Boy before but this one certainly caught my eye. The F engine recoil and over deck style muffler, like seen on some school bus models gave it away, so I had to go take a look at it.

The gentleman selling the mower was open to offers on the mower and I ended up walking away with it for not very much money. He told me his neighbor bought it new and gave it to him when they moved. So it sat about five years. Unfortunately he didn't get the bag with it.

This one has the F engine with the above deck style muffler which is a very neat by unusual setup to see on an F engine. IIRC there are a few school bus models setup like this since they have BBC. The BBC appears to be in good working order. I was looking at the serial number it this mower looks to be from right around 1987. I think the 'F' denotes '87.

As you'll see in my video, it didn't take too much to get it running. The engine seems very tight and the bearings in the BBC seem good since it's pretty quiet. I would like to find a bag for it.

Lawn Boy did not build those but JD built them and used LB engines on some of their mid 1980s 2 stroke mowers. The deck and the rest of the deck was all JD. Roger

I see. I’ve always wondered what their arrangement was with JD but that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Nice score!
I have a 12sb just like that. I think you can find the bag online, but the price is prohibitive.

I have that same mower but it is the 12SB so it has the self propel. Trying to find parts for that exact engine and parts break down. Let me know if you find anything. I have been looking on LB and JD and neither show that serial number or model number.
