So today I picked up a tractor from a fellow on the eastern shore. He did not know anything about it. It was his grandfathers and has not been run in several years. Looking it over, I new if it was a problem, I could part it out :Stop:
Anyway got it home, locked up tight. Poured some MMO in the cylinders. Took the shroud off and found the starter was jammed. Freed it up, hit the key and sprayed oil over everything in the shop! Anyhow, got that cleaned up. got it to run on carb spray. It has really old gas in it. Figured I need a carb kit. Then I saw the label on the shroud. Kohler M20 Magnum! Sooo, it's a repowered tractor? I don't know but I guess so. Anyone know the number on the carb kit?

Nice. I saw that over there and thought about taking a look but just didn't have the time. I think u did pretty well, especially with the M20. I believe you need Kohler 25-757-02S.

Nice find! The M20 is a nice plus. I always like the look of the early G-series 87-88 with the blue stripe and the short steering column. Jason

Well, not quite a runner. I've cleaned the tank, replaced the gas lines and filter and cleaned the carb 3 times. I cannot get it to start on it's own without carb spray and when it does run, it searches, spits and sputters. It's a little frustrating. From what I can see, there is only 1 small hole in the carb throat that is connected to the idle circuit. Is that right? It will not idle at all.

When you cleaned the carb, did you remove the two mixture screws and spray both cleaner and air in those holes? If not try that.

Also, are you sure the fuel pump is working? Sitting is really hard on carbs and fuel pumps.

Sheldon
I agree with the sitting being hard. I have been fighting the 5665 all week!

Some days it runs nice, some days it will not transition from idle to operating speed.

I am going to disassemble the carb again, and soak in in carb cleaner, AGAIN!!

:dunno:

Ok, 4th time is the charm. Tore the carb apart again. Spray, clean, blow, repeat. Pried out the welch plugs and found another passage. spray, clean, blow, repeat. Picked up a carb kit. back together and..... it starts and runs! Not perfect but pretty good. drove it around to burn off the spilled MMO (and kill mosquitos). Even threw on the deck with the 3/8" belt and cut a few passes. Seems to surge a bit when given full throttle but it will even out. A little more adjusting of the carb and governor is needed but I'm pretty happy.

:)

Check the throttle cable, make sure it's free and moving like it should. I have similar symptoms on my 18-G. (Surging) A little wd-40 and a throttle Luber it feels about right now. Oh, and I also knifed off the black protectant on the cable.

Lubed up the throttle cable. I'll do it again tomorrow and work it back and forth. Thanks for the tip. I fabbed an air cleaner from a K301 for the Magnum. made a top from a coffe can. I think I need a real air cleaner. Anyone got an air cleaner housing from a Magnum they would like to sell?
