My name is Andrew.

Just recently moved to a 2 acre property near Baltimore. My neighbor has given me his old JD 210 which has handle the cutting last summer. Unfortunately the 47" deck has seen better days and needs to be rebuilt. with two young kids i don't have a lot of time to restore a garden tractor, but hopefully from the guidance here i can get a good lightly/gently used garden tractor(preferably JD).

I would concentrate on roadsides and C/L in the coming few months for a replacement. (I know- kinda hard to see them through the snow right now) You can also offer up your present machine for the JD collectors in your area if you do not intend to rebuild it. (Start listing it in March and renew it every 45 days.. Pictures help a lot when selling.. There are many types & brands of replacement tractors that become available so you need to be vigilant and know what kind of machine you are looking for so if a deal becomes available you can pull the trigger fast or some other buyer will own it instead of you. Buuut- sometimes a good deal becomes a nightmare quick so you really need to know the warning signs of trouble.. Our members are great at spotting trouble and giving great advice so post a thread or do a search and lots of help is availabe.. :goodl: in your quest!:trink39:

Welcome Andrew. If the tractor itself us serviceable why not just buy a better deck for now?

There are only 4 or 5 dozen members in the area who might part with a decent deck.

I have looked around for the past couple months for a deck replacement but i keep coming back and asking myself the same question, "how much longer will the 210 last me without requiring major service". As i said, i currently don't have a ton of free time to repair/service a tractor (i consider maintenance separate).

So right now i am in the mindset that a newer used machine might be more reliable.

The 210 does smoke a tad bit during operation but i wouldnt consider oil consumption to be off the charts. While i am not mechanic i do consider myself to be an advanced DIYer.
