Hey everyone. I'm a new member of this forum. I'm also almost new to working on older mowers. My brother-in-law gave me his Original Cub Cadet with a 7hp Kohler engine. Unfortunately the the connecting rod had broken, damaging the block on the inside. I'm looking to either repair or replace this engine.

That all being said. My first question, probably of many, in this forum is to find out if the k161 from a Cub Cadet 70 will fit easily into an Original. I'm mainly concerned that the shaft heigh for the engine in the Original may not be the same as that for the 70.

I'm able to obtain a working motor from a 70 fairly cheap, so that seems like the most practical option if it will fit.

Once I get approved, I can go ahead and ask my question in the appropriate location, but I wanted to get it out there just in case.

So... You dove in and started to fizz?? :sidelaugh :sorry1:

:Welcome1:fizzgig

I don't have the tech data on those motors so I do it the poor man's way--> Measure from the mounting surface up on both motors to the crankshafts.. Also measure from the crank side mounting holes back to ensure the driveshaft-crank length is acceptable.. :goodl:

As far as I know the K161 in the 70 should bolt right in. If not the parts that are different you can scavenge off the blown K161. They will be the same block.
As stated before, it will bolt right in. Where are you located? I'm near the Fayetteville area. :thThumbsU
welcome fizzgig
There are some differences about the 70 and Original engines. Front starter pulley. A 70 pulley will work. Clutch drive cup might be different. The oil pan is different but might work.

Like I said, any parts that are different can be scavenged from the blown motor though.
Thanks everyone for your replies. I decided not to buy the 70. The motor was running and the wheels were in great shape, but everything else was terrible and probably not even worth trying to part out. I ended up buying a replacement block on ebay.
