Getting read for winter and I finally got my lights installed. Picked up a set from Harbor Freight, purchased a new switch, green glow of course.
I must say, gravity didn't work while trying to get the wiring through the ROPs, after much creativity and taking the entire top hoop off, mission accomplished.

I ran a lead from the battery and grounded the lights to the seatbelt bolt and the switch to the starter ground. the switch and light fuse is 15amp keeping in mide the alternator is only 20 amps

Thanks for the idea jester. Are your lights too powerfull to use the factory JD wires taped up behind the seat? I was just going to cut the factory plastic harness off and use my own crimp connectors to connect some old 55watt car fog lights I got somewhere in the garage. The factory wire harness is already wired to the dash switch even. Maybe my idea is not so good?

You should be able to get away with doing that: that's where the factory JD halogen lights plug into.

To be on the safe side, I did similar to what Jester did: ran a separate fused wire harness to the battery. I used a relay so that my ROPS light switch could be controlled by the tractor's dash switch. Looking back, I would have done exactly as jester did so that I can run the ROPS light without having to power the headlights.

As Phoenix said, I liked the idea of being able to run them separately. I was also thinking of using a double switch so I could run the front and rear separate or together, but then figured, if I need front lights, well I need rear ones as well for snow clearing.
My lights are actually car fog lights as well. I was unable to find full specs on the box for the actual draw, but since its only a 15amp fuse, I am sure they would have worked with the JD wiring, I just didn't want to take the chance and have to rewire later.
Maybe in the future if I need to light up the neighborhood, I will use the factory harness for more lights. :trink40:

For getting wire through the ROPS . Use a vacuum cleaner and suck through a piece of long ribbon then connect the wire and pull through. I have done this alot pulling wire through conduit. Greenlee actually makes fish tape for this purpose. My longest crooked run with bends and turns run has been about 200' with great sucess.

Sorry I am always late to the party ! I saw an electrician do this about 25 yrs ago and it has been in my" war chest" for dealing with fishing wires ever since. If the ribbon is really long and getting heavy make a small birds nest on the end to increse the surface area the suction can act on ,that one is my own.

usually its not a problem for me running wires, but the small hole I made was just small enough I didn't have anything small to fit the opening but heavy enough to attach to my twine and let gravity take over.

I have also had luck drawing wires through odd areas by attaching a little piece of metal to the end of the wire and using a rare earth magnet to coax it along to where I needed say another small hole a foot away , like the other light .

Just ran a ribbon (Greenlee) through about 200 feet of 1/2 pvc with two turns for a cable wire and phone wire from my crawl space to the barn Using a vacuum.

thats how the utility workers do it, so why not apply it on a smaller scale?

All right, I get it.... my way was the hard way... :thThumbsU
