I haven't posted much this summer... Been busy.

We sold our boat a few months back due to lack of use. Now, we miss the water and went for jet skis. Somehow, I came home with this thing. 1994 Four Winns 195 Sundowner, for pretty much the cost of the trailer. Sad part is that it's pretty much the same size and layout of our last boat, just newer. Will it get used more than the last one? I don't know, but it's several thousand cheaper so I won't mind so much if it sits there... Not as much capital tied up.

The problem? It needs an engine, but it came with a brand new remanufactured long block, along with the old engine. A true basket case. PO said he paid someone to swap the engines. They pulled the old engine, then left town with his cash. He paid someone else another good chunk of change to finish the job, but they just took his money and ran. He pretty much gave it away after that (enter: Me!). I've taken several boat engines out, but never attempted to put one back in, let alone one I didn't take out.

So far, so good. I have the accessories transferred over, pulleys aligned, fuel system hooked up (not shown), etc and ready to drop in. The starter and alternator are laying down in the bilge with wires still connected. I'm banking this engine is good, as it was test ran, timed, and drained at the build shop in Wisconsin), and the manifolds and everything else seem good. I'm hoping to hoist it in later today. Can't start it yet... Need to replace the ignition because I didn't get the key, and I'm waiting for new exhaust manifold studs (some were missing). Should have them Monday.

One of the reasons the PO didn't take on the project himself was he couldn't lift the engine. Found another use for the Massey GC2300 (note the safety stands). Too bad it doesn't hav the height and reach to get the engine in the boat. Need a come along and a stout tree.

Loaded the engine in the truck and towed boat to parents' house. They have a crooked tree that works good for removing and installing engines. My oak trees just don't seem to have any stout branches low enough to work with. My dad and I took a few hous to hoist the engine up, back the boatunder it, and lower it into place. Mext came the alternator and power steering pump. Outdrive slid right on, and seems to go into gear as it should. Need to finish installing the cooling system, hooking up a few odds and ends wires. Major systems were left completely intact by whoever removed the engine - alternator, starter, power steering, etc were all still hooked up and laying in the bilge. Made reinstallation MUCH easier. Still need to figure out some linkage and wait for the exhaust manifold studs to come in. Also need to replace the ignition. I think I have one laying around somewhere...

Nice boat, but you know, the engine and outdrive are obsolete and most of the Ford marine parts are NLA. The old OMC Cobra is getting hard to get parts for but that looks like it might be a Cobra/ Volvo SX hybrid and they started in '94... Either way it's a nice boat and Four Winns are top quality.

Ya that does look like the newer omc. Still a bit of a oddball but it looks in great shape. The ford engines are uncommon in the marine world these days but the base platform is easy to work on, and a fair amount of inboards still use them so aftermarket stuff should be ok to get for some years.

I agree... Omc isn't my first choice. I much prefer Mercruiser. But, like I say, I was pretty much given this boat.
I do have the alignment tool. I'll re-align when I pull the drive off to change the gasket and grease the U-joints on the drive shaft. The OMC drive line in these models these years is pretty common; it definitely does look like the hybrid, too. I have two neighbors with Sundowners, both with OMC drives (well, one sold two years ago...). There's a big used market for these parts. I can find a complete non-running parts boat around here for $400-$500, if anything is needed. Usually the drives are intact.

And these later ones were a good drive. Just hard to keep up with the huge Mercruser name, and marketing. Not a fan of the old stringer mount.... but the newer ones were good. Frankly I like the Ford engine also. Ford engines were IMHO always more tourquey then GM's. Makes for getting a loaded boat up on plane quicker. And the nice basic 2bbl carb they use is easy to tune, clean, and maintain.

The Volvo/ OMC hybrid drive is fully serviceable still since only the transom plate is really OMC. the leg is Volvo SX. Be prepared to spend $$$ if it needs manifolds since Fords been outa the marine game since 1997, parts just don't exist like GM parts.. If it's a freshwater boat it will likely run what it has forever.

Now if it was the EFI version, You would have pretty much been screwed. Volvo discontinued all the parts and sensors and ECU and only a couple were really Ford sensors, and there known for always needing something

OK- I think pretty much all that's left in the engine bay are manifolds and a few misc mystery wires. Then, to remove the outdrive, align the engine, reinstall kit for outdrive, replace ignition, prime oil system, and fire it up! Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday I'll get to hear it run for the first time. I hope the engine is any good and rotates the correct direction...

The mooring cover tore out a few hard rains back according to the PO, so the interior was sopping wet when we got it. With fans and a dehumidifier, I think I have that worked out. Contemplating a commercial ozone generator to kill everything.

Still under $2100 total project cost. I think that's where I'll end up, barring any major catastrophies. I got the wrong plugs the other day, so I'll have to exchange those. I'm going to try and re-use the distributer cap and plug wires. I have a bunch of $1.68/quart Valvoline synthetic blend from a sale at O'Reilly awhile back, so in that will go.

I'm not seeing the E.S.A Module or any transom shift brackets, are those yet to be hooked up? I'm looking at my OMC manual and it looks like a few things are not there. Kit include impeller?, that is a $20 fix you don't want to have to think about in the middle of the lake when the motor overheats but I may be getting too far ahead with the outdrive not taken off. I'm just antsy for seeing it in the water cruising on plane.

EDIT: I think I see the ESA brackets on the right side, what color are the stray wires?

Most of the stray wires are black. I know at least one of them is a ground to the starboard manifold. The shift bracket and a couple electrical barckets also hang on the manifolds, at least one on each side. I think your pictures might help me a lot. I see a lot more detail than many of the pictures I googled. Thank you!

Ok, I might just have to take you up on that. So far, all wires have been grounds. One comes from the transom assembly, another 3 or so from the breaker panel that look to go to a lug on the manifold, etc.
2 (16ga) black wires come from the transom area for trim sensor wire, they go into a connector, from the connector one is black the other is a brw/wht (16ga) that goes to the main connector cable. Include the wire size, color and where they roughly come from, EX: a connector, switch, or gauge.

Thanks, FD!
So far, everything without a plug has been a ground, black in color with a terminal ring, many with signs of a star washer thingie, verified with multi meter. All plugs except two are connected. They appear to be unused, as the prongs are corroded, dirty, and don't show any signs of ever being hooked up.

I got the manifolds installed today, finding out not all locations rewuire studs. I guess that explains the 6 extra bolts I had. Oh, well. Got a new battery tonight, blowing my whole budget $120 ouch!). But, it needed a battery and I just don't have one. Linkage bracket installed, breaker panel bracket installed, most wires ran and secured.

To do: prime oil system(should already be done, as it was ran at the rebuild shop supposedly but better safe than sorry), engine alignment, hook up plug wires, replace key switch, tighten exhaust boots, one more ground to hook up, install battery, then try to start it. Fingers crossed!

I won't be able to work on this until likely the week after next, so at this point I have to leave off for awhile, unfortunately. My goal was to hear this turd run this week :(

My biggest fear, other than the engine is complete junk, is that the engine is opposite rotation than I require. If this engine is counterclockwise rotation and I need clockwise, then what? Can I correct it with an opposite rotation prop? Are these outdrives just as strong in reverse as in forward? Aw, crap... The impeller would be spinning the wrong way. Hopefully it's the correct rotation...

Good to hear it going well, I would just make a few notes on a piece of paper and leave it on the seat to pick up where you left off. Fingers crossed on the engine condition but the rotational difference I believe (manual not in front of me now) happens in the outdrive LH/RH drive. I will check the manual and post up later but I seem to remember seeing that.
