Thanks to Arcam8123 for the idea for this. Took the old, rusty, and poorly repaired by previous owner hood for my 5260 and trimmed it to fit with my "new" Case 220 fuel tank I installed to replace the rusted out Kohler (made of gold and priced that way) fuel tank. I just sat it on the machine for the pics, I still have to install the bushings, bolts, and rubber bumpers before she will be ready to go. I like it, and now the battery and regulator will be protected. Just have to get some small decals and stripes for it.

Hey, that came out pretty cool! Now, you just need a number for it. Like a 6260. That will keep people guessing!

I can see this forum in 30 years! Somebody will be posting,,,,,,, "Hey everybody, I just hauled home a 6250! It's in pretty good shape, but I can't find any info on it! Anybody have a manual for a 6260?"

Yes, you have to come up with a number for it!

Well, since it is a 5260, and all the mods were done to make a Case 220 fuel tank work, I could badge it as a 2260. That is another good idea--I will have to get some vinyl decals made up for it :thThumbsU

Very nice work! I wouldn't have thought of trimming down a hood that much. I have a bit of an aversion to making major modifications like that to components. How are you supporting the back of the hood and preventing it from rubbing on the new fuel tank?

It also gives you a good bit of room behind the tank for mounting something. You could make a nice box just above the dashboard for mounting gauges, or maybe add one of those replica Ford tractor toolboxes to give you some onboard tool storage. I look forward to seeing your progress on this project.

I normally would not cut down a hood like that either, but in this case I had two overwhelmingly good reasons for doing so.....

1. the previous owner had cut out a large area on the left rear side of the hood, I assume either to fit a different muffler or to make it easy to get to the trans. dipstick. Either way, the hood was already toast, and they did a sloppy job of cutting it.

2. The original kohler fuel tank was toast, and replacements cost 150 plus for a used one. Instead of selling my kids to buy a fuel tank, I used the fuel tank off of a Case 220 tractor. It will not fit under the factory hood as it is larger in all dimensions. But since this is the tractor I use in my garden, and since the hood was already chopped, I figured I could make it look nice.

As for the rear of the hood hitting the fuel tank, it is not mounted in the photos. It will have a piece of black edge molding around the rear edge, and a rubber strip on the underside of the hood, with a corrosponding one on the tank when I finish mounting it hopefully this coming weekend. That is a good idea for mounting a small tool box. I will have to start looking for one --Thanks!!

Don't forget a cup holder!
LOL. Actually, I got to thinking today that it might be a good space to mount a better muffler. That little pancake muffler is LOUD!!!!! Any suggestion on a quieter setup??

I've got the sardine can muffler on mine, and agree that they are loud. I've been thinking about finding a larger cylindrical muffler to mount horizontally at the left side of the battery box, below the hood, and use a piece of flex exhaust pipe to connect back to the port. I've been looking for something about 3 - 3 1/2" dia, and maybe 6 - 8" long. I've seen a couple of mufflers in pictures but haven't been able to nail down a part number. I've seen a few really large mufflers mounted there, but want something more proportional to the front of the machine.

Something like what's present on the later 5000 and the Professional series tractors would work well. The problem is, I don't believe Gravely's carrying them anymore (last time I called anyway, none were available). They had to be acquiring them from an independ. manufacturer, who might still be producing them for other machines. Maybe Don or someone else might have a lead on that info. Seems like the last list price for that style muffler (from Gravely) was over $100.
