The postman brought my new float today for the SS18 which is good :trink40:
I did a search here and looked in the repair manual for the adjustment and its says 1/8 inch clearance between the float and gasket when held upside down on the unhinged end of it.
I know from the search that no spring comes with the new float but do you use the old spring or just install with out one.
I installed the new float but it still seems like its flooding ...float set to high?

The last few carbs that I had to rebuild had plastic floats which didn't have 'springs' on teh needle valve piece. The last brass float carb hdidn't have one to start with. Doesn't the 'spring' just help hold the needle valve in place while assemblying?

If it keeps flooding, make sure the surface thatcthe needle valve butts up against is clean and not deformed.

Yes I think thats all the spring does
It idles good but when I try to give it gas it just seems to die out I am not really sure if its flooding or starving for fuel ?
If i hold it upside down and measure the float it has almost 1/4 inch from the gasket on the unhinged side. I read on here that the float should almost be level.
What would it act like if the float was to low or high ?

I bought one for mine and it was brase, and I want to say mine came with the spring, I did the 1/8 measurment, and installed them both, and havent had to fool with it, but Iv also been told that it will work with out it. I had the spring so I figured I would go ahead and put it back in

I think I have to raise it a little because in the picture it says 1/8 inch and on mine its about 1/4 of an inch:dunno:

I had the same problem with my SS/16. I had to set my brass float higher (closer towards hinge side). When I first installed it, the float only let in a little bit of fuel, And by the time the float opened the needle valve the engine was starving for fuel. - Brad

well i tried raising the float and still have the same problem it will idle only and die out if I even try to move the throttle.
I had dried the old float out for the last week or so and sealed it but had the same results.
I will say it starts real good but that's it :(
Its cold out so I gave up tonight, tomorrow I will take the gas line off and blow it out and add a new fuel filter.

I set mine so that when I hold the top of the carb upside down, the float is level and parallel to the gasket. I never used the spring, and mine has been fine.
