Hi Guys, here's a stumper for ya.

I have a Murray rider 38inch 11hp engine that I have replaced the motor on. The 11 conked out on me last fall and I found a 14.5 twin to put in it. So far so good. I have had it running too and it's nice and smooth. I had put the mower up on ramps so I could hook up the drive belt after replacing a pulley and left it overnight. When I looked at it the next day I began to wonder where most of the gas went from the tank. Apparently when the mower was tipped to one side (about 45 degrees) the gas drained through the carb and into the oil reservoir.

This engine has a fuel pump and I believe the other was just a gravity feed.
My question is, do I need to do anything special with this new engine or just not lean it over again?

Also, I have drained the oil/gas completely and pulled the spark plugs hoping the gas/oil mix will evaporate. Do I need to worry about anything regarding that mess?

Thanks for any input!

Tilting any mower on it's side for an extended period of time can cause gas as well as oil and in some cases the battery to have seepage problems. All liquids will flow to the lowest point available. As far as the engine being hurt by the accidental gas/oil mix, IMO as long as the engine was not run for an extended period of time it was not hurt. In fact the gas probably did an internal crankcase cleanup. Sort of like using one of those oil flush products before an oil change on your car. I would recommend an inline gas shutoff valve between the tank and the carb. $5-$6 fix for the valve alone. A kit with new fuel line/clamps added runs $8-$10. Cheap insurance IMO. Also add an inline fuel filter if one is not present.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Thanks! That helps a lot. In fact, as I was waking up this morning my mind was thinking about the problem already and what to do. Suddenly the thought pops in my head that I need a gas shut off valve. Funny how things come to you sometimes when you're half asleep. A second opinion is always helpful! :)

Thankfully I had not run the engine at all with all that gas in the oil. Now I just need to get the water out of the intake manifold after a thunderstorm blew the cover off last night and I had the air cleaner off. Ugh! Always one more problem.

Thanks again.
