New Acquisition Save or Part

2806 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  gm1276
i recently picked up a gravely professional 12 from a state auction but it has left me in a quandry. The goods of it are its newer, has only 123 hours on it and has the steering brakes. the bad news it sat outside and has a fair amount of rust along with missing parts.

what i have found missing so far is:
all the pressure grip parts,
pto assembly at the casting (all levers are there and lines up to the casting)

i still need to dive in to find more but i wanted to get an idea of at what point are they worth parting out rather than trying to fix?

more pictures will follow tonight but heres the one from the auction

I have restored much worse than that.

If you don't want it, I will take it and restore it.

if its that low hours its worth trying to put together, with the sticker on the hood, assuming its from CDOT, it would normally have 4000+ hours on it. 123 hours is still kinda break-in for these tractors
Some guys on here would part it out in a heartbeat, but most of us would fix it up. If you want a machine to use, it would definitely be worth putting some time and money into it. If you don't think you're going to use it, you can offer it for sale as-is first; if it doesn't sell you can always part it out as a last resort.

if its easy enough to restore i'd love to do it since i've been wanting a 12+ hp machine for a while. i love the l8 i have but for some things it just doesnt have the power to do what i need it to.
it did come from the CT DOT it was actually used with the sweeper attachment (controls for it are still attached)

only reason i am really hesitating is i'm restoring an 84 k5 and a 88 c2500 as well so i have some time to work on the gravely but not a ton.

Whats the best way to check the engine, other than throwing a battery to it? this is my first go at a kohler

Man, don't throw a battery! You could hurt somebody!

Or worse yet, you could hurt the tractor.

Part it out,

I need that little grill behind the engine!!

You surely do not want it to end up looking like this!!

I would have said "keep it" even before seeing Richard's and CADplans"s excellent reincarnations.

Since you have it, you might as well store it away (inside, if at all possible), and set it aside to be brought back sometime in the future.

I also have a few ( I think it's 5 1/2 now) tractors waiting to be brought back, but they're safe, and dry in the meantime.

(Great seeing those pics again Richard, and CAD!)

Another vote for saving it, I hate to see good tractors get parted out.

I hope you don't part it out, it doesn't really look that bad....but if you do I would like the steering brakes.
If you want to sell it, PM or email me.

Second that! :ditto::ditto::ditto:

If a few other folks would've gotten their mitts on it, it would already be in pieces on E-Bay. Even with its deficiencies, the tractor's still got too much going for it to strip it down. Assuming the engine's OK, the remainder of the noted problems are all repairable over the course of time and not for a tremendous amount of money.

i started digging into it more last night to put tubes in the tires for now just to get it mobile again. over all it doesnt seem too bad. the left side brakes were frozen, the pads actually fell off the shoes. it looks like i need a new axle as one thread is rusted off. the transmission will need to be pulled apart as i can tell its a bit rusted.

since it appears the restore is going to take a while and since it sounds worthwhile to restore, its going to be moved from the garage to the basement to become a winter project.

I'd part it out. :D

But I recommend you fix it. We have everything you need, and at far better than new prices. Give me a call or email when you start digging in.

With the parts i've found missing so far and the prices of the new parts i think i'll be talking to you a lot.
After everyone's reply and the fact i really like the majority of the features on it, coupled with the fact i dont have a big enough garage to work on the trucks in the winter it'll make a good winter project plus i had room in my basement workshop for it.

though once i'm able to sell off the extra L parts i'll have more room.

As an update got a bit sidetracked yesterday and started looking more into the pro 12

engine turns freely and looks clean when looking into the oil check. the transmission appears to have some water in it which i half expected to find when i saw the advance casting with all the rusty sludge. it looks like there is just some surface rust for the most part.

is it safe to assume i should pull it apart and clean the rust off? or should i replace anything rusty?

also if anyone needs any of the gravely l parts i have on ebay right now or even wants to make me an offer on the bulk please feel free i could really use the extra space in the workshop right now.
