Hi Everyone,
Just bought my first! tractor - a 1985 Case Ingersoll 226. It came with a deck that seems to be in great shape, a snow blower, and a small dump trailer. I'll take some photos but the tractor seems to be in nice, totally original shape.

I have a couple of questions about it...

First, from what the seller told me, there is an issue with the throttle lever where it seems to settle from Max to mid throttle. I guess something is loose with the lever? Is there an easy solution for this?

Second, I have no service records at all on the tractor. Is there a recommended list of preventive maintenance items to take care of?

Last, I need to get a new seat, or at least a new seat cover. Any suggestions?

Oh - one other question - I haven't decided yet if I am going to keep the trailer. Any idea what these are worth approximately?

Welcome aboard and congrats on the acquisition.

Many will be along shortly with pointers.

The throttle issue is common after 25+ years ... basically friction in the handle pivot holds it in place normally. The cable is inexpensive and easy to replace ... or others will give you pointers on how to rework the one you have so it might stay put.

We stock nice seat covers from Classic accessories, for both the low and high back seats ... the high backs have a nice tool pouch integrated in.

Many aftermarket seats can be adapted by drilling new mounting holes, but generally only sliding seats or the OEM will set as far back as original equipment. The OEM seats are readily available ... if a tad pricey.

Key maintenance begins with simple fluids. Oil, trans, and hydraulic system (15W40 motor oil for your cool, Northern climate ... NOT hydraulic oil). Baseline your tractor's fluids well.

Then consider moving on to ignition parts, steering bearings and rod end joints. Don't forget the mower deck over the winter ... great time to get in new bearings and idler pulleys so it runs whisper quiet in the spring.


As for the trailer ... I'll let others comment. Is it an OEM Ingersoll? Or something else?

Thanks for your reply. I am sure that we will be speaking soon regarding parts, etc. as the need arises.

In terms of the trailer, yes - It is called the Ingersoll HiHaul 1000. It is a dump trailer. Seems unusual to me, I've been looking around for one of the tractors and haven't seen another.

Ok Guys - first two problems with the new Ingersoll 226. Strangely enough, it doesnt appear that my Onan engine has an Oil Filter. Is this possible? I loosened up the side engine tins and all I have are cooling fins.

The onan engine model is: B43M-GAO16/3622A
The onan serial # is: J843 843982
The ingersoll tractor serial # is: 14071568

I was about to pickup one of the larger sized Wix filters only to find that my engine doesnt seem to have the filter sticking out of the side. I just have tins in place there. Is there an adapter that I can retrofit? Other options (aside from not using a filter)?

Second, the plug wires look ancient. They have to be original. Any suggestions on replacements?

as to the filter.
remove the #2 side tin.
if all you see is a 1/8" pipe plug you are out of luck.
if you see a cast plate held on by two bolts,
than a filter adapter can be installed.

as to the plug wires, if they say onan or whitacre
on the plug end, they are original.
these are solid core wires, with a resistor built in
the plug end.
i consider them to be very good wires, and basically trouble free.
they usually test in the 18/20 K range.

Ok, editing my post again with a proper photo from a someone else's engine. Unfortunately, I do NOT have the plate on my engine. Bummer. In any event, posting the photo of what to look for that I found on another forum.

So now that I don't/can't have an oil filter, is there a recommended oil change interval? Or just follow the factory's 25 hour guidance?

Ok Guys, did some minor work on the 226 this morning getting it ready for the snow that is coming today. Warmed her up and did a quick oil change. Also greased up the chain on the snow caster and put some lubricant onto the blower itself.

This is really the first time I have done anything with the tractor since I picked it up a couple weeks ago. It seems like I might have some carb issues or something else is up. Running at higher throttle, the engine seems to rev up and down. This also happens at low/mid throttle when the engine is cold but smooths out once it warms up. As the engine revs up and down I am also seeing voltage variations of a few amps on the meter.

2nd question is more of a "read the manual" type question, I guess. But, is there way to lock in the drive lever so that I don't have to hold it the whole time? Not really a big deal for snow blowing but I could see that getting annoying when it is mowing season.

The drive lever should stay in position once placed. Particularly in full forward.

A few common culprits here ... either the brake is applied, the brake return spring is monkeyed up, or the neutral safety switch is worn out.

As for the surging at high RPM, that's a common symptom of running lean or ignition break down. Check for air/vacuum leaks and good spark, no damage to wires, etc.

Thanks Brian! I will check into both issues and report back. Now that you mention it, I think I may have left the brake locked when I first parked it. Agh, sorry still learning - hopefully this is the issue.

My ignition wires are the originals and the wire jackets are cracking. I'll plan to replace these when I change out the plugs. Is there a known proper fit replacement set? Or should I just pull them and try to find a match at the auto parts store? I'll also check into adjusting the carb for a bit more fuel but probably best that I address the ignition first.

I think your 226 will have the screw cap on coil , if original. I have those OEM Onan wires in stock, $19.72 each, which I could ship out to you. I've got the correct plugs in stock, also.

If you've got a newer coil with standard style boots, then any good wire picked up locally will do the trick.

What's the serial number on your tractor? May have the carb rebuild bits in stock, also.

I was wondering if any of you all know where I can find a hub clutch for a 1987 Ingersoll 226? Mine snapped on me when I was putting it back together.
