I have an 18HP Craftsman 42" cut Model #917.276390 with a Dana Transaxle Model D4360-140.

From my research I've found that this transaxle becomes hard to shift then the input shaft start whinning and that is exactly what happen to me.

My question: is there a new transmission I can swap out because I'm not interested in a used Dana with the same problems. Rebuilding is way over my pay scale also.

I’m interested in the take old out and slap in the new.

Is this possible or am I dreaming?

I've watched all the YouTube video's and that pair several times. That is why I said rebuilding is out of my league.

I'm looking for something new that that will fit my tractor and just swap new for old and be done with it.

I could be wrong but I think spicer has been out of the mower transmission business for a few years. Due to the age it'd probably going to be tough to find anyone that has one still in stock. I think the best option would be a good used one, or find a new transmission that can be adapted without too much re-engineering. There may be a peerless that will fit without too much trouble.

That is exactly what I'm looking for a new transmission that will fit like you said without much trouble. Don't want the used one because I bet there's a very good reason why Spicer is no longer in business if you know what i mean?

Do you want to sink $300+ into this tractor, or is it time to move on? Buying a used machine of better quality at an estate or yard sale is an option you might wish to consider. Sometimes it's just time to say goodbye.
Watched my 2001 $850.00 truck hoisted on to the flat bed and off to the pick and pull with little regret after seven years. It was time.
