Ok its a MTD model 606g labelled as a Huskee. It has a Briggs & stratton 18.5 hp ELS motor. The info on the motor is this model 31q777 type 0215e1 and code 0410212e. Bought it new in 05 I think from TSC and use it to mow and plow. Since new has liked to backfire on shut down but by letting it idle down for a sec before shut off usually is ok. Last summer it got to the point where it would mow fine and then quit when warm but start right up and go again then it backfired once and quit. I pulled the head and one of the rocker arm mounting studs had broken and bent the push rod. I replaced both push rods and the head and finished the year with it fine, plowed with it all winter fine and then this year it will mow for 20 minutes or so and then shut off, but again it will start right back up but have very little throttle response. I have cleaned all the fins of debris, tried with no gas cap, pulled the fuel shut off solenoid to see if functioning(it is) and the only thing I find is that some rodent knawed a bit on the coil unit. I can follow the coil causing my issue with heat but why would it restart while still warm? Also does anyone know the part # for the coil I need given my engine info? Thanks for any and all help or insight and sorry for the long winded question:dunno:

Have you checked to see if mice built a nest somewhere over the winter? If they chewed on the coil wire insulation, that can cause problems. Had the same thing happen to my MTD 990. If you have an old nest, clean it our really good - especially droppings and urine - and see it that helps.

Good luck,
Rich

No nests, all clean. Over the winter I keep it in my garage as I plow my drive with it, during the summer it stays in the shed with the vermin. Only visible issue is some chew marks on the coil wire but I am having a hard time convincing myself a bad coil would fire right back up without cooling down any.

Well, its been awhile but I believe I solved the issue so I will post my results to possibly help someone in the future. I did change the coil due to the rodent damage. Since it would start right back up I figured the coil was a good start as even if it didnt cure it the other was damaged and it didnt cure it. I removed the fuel shut off solenoid to check it again and it was functioning as designed, but I noticed the black cap on the plunger was very loose. My original intent was to just plug the hole and run it with out the solenoid to see if it made a difference, since I didnt have any plug for the hole I put the solenoid back in with out the loose cap. It now runs perfect and I have mowed with it alot now with no stalling, no backfiring like it used to and vastly improved throttle response. So again not sure if it will help anyone else but thats what cured mine.
