I have an Craftsman LT 1000

Okay, I went out, got half the yard done stopped to answer a phone call and when I went to restart the mower, "CLICK!" Nothing happened.

Tonight I replaced the battery, CLICK!

Someone told me to take jumper cables and run one from the + side of the battery to the starter terminal post that had the red cable coming off. He said this should make the engine spin. As soon as I connected it, sparks flew everywhere and the split second it was making contact, the motor did infact spin... and the key was NOT in the ignition switch! It scared the #$%^ out of me. I was not prepared for that. So, since the yard is half mowed I'd like to be able to get the mower started while my starter solenoid is on order.

Can someone tell me a STEP by STEP guide on how to get this thing fired up and stay running? Does the key need to be in the ignition and in "on" position?

just what you did, with the key on. and sparks are normal.

Will it stay running? I mean do I disconnect the cable once it's running? And when the key is turned off, the mower will stop correct?

yes, once it starts, unhook the cable. and it will run and drive as usual. all your doing is making it crank, then start. after that, your in normal running mode

great! thanks! I just wanted to make sure because the key wasn't in the ignition when I tapped it the first time.

your making the starter turn, bypassing the selinoid. thats whats supposed to happen. now get to mowing! ;)

do it the safe easy no sparks way, they make a switch just for that, it has a handle with a push button on top and two long wires with alligator clips, mechanics use them to "bump" engines over. The auto parts store will know what you mean. Of course you could just replace the solenoid.

First make sure your PTO is off, the brake is on, and there is weight in the seat.

I bought a new battery and solenoid once to discover my PTO switch was still on.

But jumping from the battery to starter terminals can also be done with a sacrificial screwdriver. It may get hot enough to weld itself to one of the terminals.

Much safer and less dramatic, you can apply 12 volts to the switch terminal of the solenoid with a jumper wire or starter bump switch as mentioned.

thats if the selinoid was good. if he used the bump switch, from positive to starter, the magic smoke would come out of the wires and switch, also likely his hand.

+ D-Dog said make sure it's in neutral, if it does start it'll take off on you since you're bypassing all safety switches.....Mike

it may be easier to bump the terminal at the starter,dont be timid with the jumper,sooner it makes solid contact,the less sparks it will make,so press it right against the terminal...also,check ALL your grounds...unbolt them,scuff with sandpaper,and reattach...do the same with the solenoid terminals(unhook battery first)...and inspect all wiring for chafing or pinching,unplug all plug-in connectors and check for corrosion,etc...and check any fuses...im not sure which did the trick,but this process worked on my sabre...good luck

oops...was thinking you said you were bumping the solenoid,but after rereading,i see you were bumping at the starter:fing20:

I have one of those button type with aligator clips, however, the wires on mine are 12ga and not designed to go from battery to starter for cranking. Mine is designed to go from B+ (Big post cable from solenoid to battery)to crank side of solenoid (Small post from ignition switch.) and that activates the solenoid to allow full amperage to start the mower.
If you have large enough wires on the button it would work fine going from Battery direct to starter stud.
I have the same problem on one of my mowers intermitently and I haven't troubleshot the find the problem. Could be several things to include ignition switch, solenoid of one of several safety switches.

I was thinking of running a wire from the battery to the starter, with a starter button inline and bypass the solenoid all together..turn the key on then hit the starter button and release when it starts.......no sparks..

Just be careful when you are connecting the battery straight to the starter, as you are bypassing all of the safety switches.
It may be possible for the mower to start in gear, etc.

BB1040, be aware that the starter motor itself, not the relay, will draw a LOT of amps, and you will have sparking occurring inside the starter button switch. Unless you get a starter button switch like those that were floor mounted 70-ish years ago, you will likely burn out any push button switch(such as a 'horn button' switch) in short order.

Posters are not allowed to mention any way to bypass any safety mechanism/switch/sensor. A button switch would do that... so the engine could be started no matter the other safety switches, etc, installed. A moderator might modify your post, etc.

I use jumper cables to bypass the solenoid , but it will not start unless the key is on and the parking brake is set....and it is out of gear, those safety switches are not connected to the solenoid....probably all connected to the key switch....

you are bypassing all safeties. It will start as long as key is in run. So blades may be engaged and in gear. Risky.

LOL I had the 12 gauge. Lent it to a neighbour. Told him to connect from battery +ve to small tab on solenoid. He returned it all melted since he went to starter terminal. Never even offered to replace it.
