hi, all
I got a JD 316 with a bad motor. So I thought I slap a new motor in . WRONG!
It's a Onan Motor . they don't make them anymore, so I did the goggle and found a place in Ok. they want $ 1800.00 for a motor an install kit. YIKES!
That was for a 20 hp kohler. Any other opitions ???

Thanks, Daye

:thanku:

You might try to look on CL in your area for a whole 316 to swap the engine and then sell the rest for parts. There are a couple on CL right now that are local to me. You might get lucky and find a nicer one than what you have already.

Hey I see you are in Minnesota also. There is a guy in Hastings Mn that does a lot of work on older John Deeres. He loves the 318s mainly but works on others. He is a great guy to talk to and could point you in the right direction even if you don't buy one of his engines.

Give him a ring.

Onan short blocks can be found on Ebay for just over $1000.00 ....you can find motors on Craiglist from time to time ....I just dumped over $500.00 into mine in a rebulid (I hope it runs ???) anyhow ....it is a PITA ....shop around and see what there is for sale ....assuming you have time to do so ! Good luck,Jim

Tank you all, for the insite. I think jim's in minnesota is going to work out just find . I called a talk to Jim today. I think this giy has worked on a mower or two. He's only 40 miles or so down the road.

Where are you at? I live in Grant MN. Most don't know where that is so I typically just say Stillwater. I work in Hastings. Not too far from Jim's. I was out there to look at the 45 series loader that he had for my X585. He sold it a day or two before I got there. He is a great guy to chat with and knows his stuff. While he knows a little about the newer machines like mine he knows about everything about the older ones.

Glad to hear you have a solution. I was going to suggest you evaluate the Onan for a rebuild and PM Onanparts.

Whatever you do don't scrap that old Onan. There's lots of folks who would be interested in it, even inoperative.

Well I got the motor in and it runs great. The install wasn't too bad THe install kit could use some inprovement the muffler ends inside the sheet metal. the motor mounts have 4 brozne spacer 1-1/2'' tall they suck!! I made 1-1/2 x 1-1/2'' tube about 10'' long and milled slots. This work sweet.
Have to cut the frame for the oil filter fit. the oil dip stick tube is under the sheet metal so you have to pull a side panel off to check the oil. Other than that its a pretty good swap''Daye
