My "stable"...I'm hooked!

Hello all, I have a post in the intro section. I have just decided I needed a winter hobby so I figured I would buy a couple mowers and fix them up over the winter for resale. Now I'm hooked! My first find was a Sabre by John Deere. I put about an hour into cleaning the fuel system and it fired right up. I put a new plug and air filter changed the oil and sharpened the blade. I can't believe someone was giving this away. My next find was an old John Deere I didn't know the 14sb was anything special until I started reading about it. I have since added a couple of craftsman self propelled and a couple of small rototillers. After seeing all that's out there I've decided to focus on the JD walk-behinds. Oh and the 14SB? A rational person would have assessed it's condition, possibly considered parting it out but not me I am tearing the thing apart and going to rebuild it from the ground up. It started as a basket case mower turns over fine but it looks rough complete with a couple dime size holes in the side of the deck. I figured I got time and I can find parts as I go along. I am a good auto mechanic but lawnmowers are pretty new to me. Hope to be talking to a lot of you guys soon. As soon as I have time to figure the picture adding thing I'll post some.

I've been contemplating painting the 14SB green :)

I must say I've contemplated that myself, however the silver has kind of grown on me
proudly display your silver deere! it shows you have one from the golden era. the green jx75 was cheapned the last few years of production. the new model should be out soon! hope its worth the wait.

Just wondering.... what were some of the differences??
There's just something wrong with anything John Deere that's not green and yellow.

And thats kind of the reason why I've considered painting my mower, its not that I dislike the silver, its just that its not green and yellow
:greendr:
the front end was diff and both front wheels were controled by a single height adjustment. the traction control cable operating sys was cheapned and broke often. engine -fc-150 changed to trouble prone(in first few years) fc 180
Larry,

When you fix up your 14sb, are you considering fixing the holes in the deck? If and when you get to that point shoot me a PM. I am a welder and was able to fix the broken parts on my lawnboy deck. Although you never can tell with any aluminum pot-metal that has spent its live soaking in gas, oil and grass...
LB Dan....I'm kinda leaning toward keeping it silver but the green is tempting. I was also wondering what you thought of this....... http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/clt/1945930190.html It is aLB that i could pick up.

Eric...Thanks! I will take you up on that. I thought about trying to Bondo it. I just got the mower torn apart and am starting the cleaning and organizing parts step.
i painted my 14sb green, theres a thread i started on it somewhere

Grab it ... that would be a nice project.

I would be all over that '57 LB 5100! Don't let it get away!
That 57 has been on craigslist for over a month. It drives me nuts when people do not adjust there prices after months/years. If no one has bought it at that price, lower it. Just a pet peeve.
