It doesn't look "bad"… but I'd be surprised if there wasn't damage within the cylinder. Either bent valve, broken valve head and/or damaged combustion chamber/piston.

Does the valve move in/out relatively easily (pulling on the stem)? I guess retainers are cheap as chips and you could put it "together" and spin the motor by hand and see if it doesn't lock-up. Maybe do a leak-down test… or if your ballsy, just fire it up.

I'd be inclined to pull the head and verify… only cost a HG.

There doesn't appear to be any damage to the valve stem. It moves in and out freely. The tip where the retainer locks on it is also not damaged. I was given a 185 many years ago that the same thing had happened and the valve was damaged where the retainer clips on. I think I will just order the broken pieces and a new oil seal and see what happens. Thanks for your input guys.

Looks like it's in really good shape. I found a good deal on a GT275 for Dad last year. They are really hard to beat for the money.

really nice pick-up, looks to be in great shape and I imagine without it running you stole it:thThumbsU

always nice to pick one up, fix a minor issue or two and have a great tractor

Yeah, I got it from the original owner. It was always garage kept and babied. When I saw it pop up on CL for $200.00 I pounced. I figured I would swap out the bad motor with one out of my 180 or my 188. Doing the valve spring was a bit tricky. I had to use 2 wires to compress it. One of moments I wish I had a third hand. This thing runs like a top. Shes a keeper.
