Saturday I bought my first tractor a 1964 4020, console shift syncro shift, it has a 148 loader on it and 5200 orig hours with a JD rebuild at about 5000 hrs. that said I don't know much about tractor and there are a few problems with this one and i haven't had time to really look at them but I wanted to get your advice on them.
1 - fuel leak, I had to drive it 20 miles from the auction to the house and I had to stop 3 time to clean the fuel off my glasses, I can see what appears to be fuel leaking from a small hole in the air cleaner where the oil is supposed to be, any ideas how its getting there? I believe its running a little rich as well is there any way to check this?
2 - I want to install a ROPS and replace the hood, any idea where I can find either one?
3 - 148 FEL, the tilt cylinders are leaking at the packing around the piston, is this a difficult to repair and are the parts available?
4 - the shift lever is difficult to operate and sometimes the gears don't want to engage can this be adjusted or repaired?
5 - I would like to get a repair manual for it, where can I find one?
6 - more to come as I work on it.
7 - is there anything you all can add to this?
Thanks for the help,

I took a few minutes this evening and looked for the fuel leak... found it or atleast I fixed one. the injector return line was broken at the compression fitting on top of the tank. it was dark when I finished so maybe tomorrow i'll be able to see if that was the only problem. what kind of oil is supposed to be in the air cleaner, there was only a small amount in it sunday when I had it open and it appeared to be fuel so I dumped it.

Same type oil that engine utilizes is what one puts in the air cleaner cup. Tech manual can be purchased from JD. I wouldn't waste money on an I&T manual as it contains very limited info. If trans shifts with difficulty then I suggest shimming shift quadrant and checking adjustments on shift rods. 5000 hrs seems very low to require an overhaul. I have a 4255 with 10,700 hrs that the engine hasn't been touched.

Hey 19644020, welcome. I also am a tractor newbie. Couldn't pass up a sweet bargain at an auction. Even with the cost of repairs on this one, it is still worth a lot more than I'm spending. One thing I gotta tell you - don't let the ever-growing list of needed repairs get to you. Just keep her running and take care of the smaller things as your income allows. Otherwise, you'll drive yourself crazy wanting to get it all done at once. I know that I have a few years yet before I'll have mine the way I want it.

The rops are still available new from deere. The hoods are not. I know there are aftermarket options on sheet metal, but some fit better than others I understand. Good used hoods are probably getting rare. The loader cylinder seals are still available and they are usually a pretty simple repair. The shift linkage is probably worn and out of adjustment. New bushings, thrust washers, and a new pivot usually tighten it up. replacing the quadrants and shift lever usually is not required. Might also need some new pins and yokes on the shift rods. If you get the linkage tightened up and adjusted, it will shift much better, unless of course you also have internal transmission problems.

I looked at the fuel leak today and its gone. tightened a few bolts on the loader and called the dealer about the ROPS. a new ROPS is $805, a tech manual is 150, and a cylinder kit is about 85. I found this manual [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Series-Tractors-Technical-Service-Manual/dp/B00B42A6S4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1376104677&sr=8-3&keywords=4020+repair+manual[/ame]
but wanted to make sure its the right one, any comments. I think I can find the seal kits cheaper just gonna have to dig some. I bought the tractor and a 10' flex wing hog at the same auction so I assumed that they went together, how can I tell if the RPMS match, I looked up the hog and I think I've got 540 gear boxes but don't know about the tractor.
thanks for the suggestion on the shift linkage adjustments, as soon as I get a manual i'll attempt it. looking for a seat too if anyone has a recommendation, i'd like a high back with arm rest.
what kind of oil are you running, i run rotella T in my truck and didn't know if there would be a benefit to running it in a non-turbo or should i just run regular 15W-40. what kind of hydraulic oil should i use?
thanks again

The manual is correct, as long as you are sure of your year. This manual covers serial numbers up to 200999. Your 4020 should be capable of 540 & 1000 rpm pto. There should be a spare shaft stored above the pto sticking out the left side. You can tell the speed by the number of splines on the shaft. Six splines is 540 and 21 spline is 1000 rpm. The shafts are held in with snap ring. It is best to point tractor downhill when changing shaft to minimize oil loss. Rotella T will be fine in your engine, I personally like the John Deere Torq Gard Plus 50 II. The recommended hydraulic oil is John Deere HyGard. If using another brand, make sure it meets JD spec J20C. Being compatible withJ20c is not the same as meeting the spec, so read the label carefully.

I'll add to what jd110 stated that I own a 4255 that has over 10,700 hrs on it with no overhaul that has had JD Plus 50 engine oil in it since day 1. I'm also a firm believer in using JD Hy-Gard hyd oil. The JD hyd oil has a additive to help brake squeaking noises.

"thanks for the suggestion on the shift linkage adjustments, as soon as I get a manual i'll attempt it. looking for a seat too if anyone has a recommendation, i'd like a high back with arm rest." :fing20: I forgot to mention that its needs beverage holders as well :thThumbsU.

the tractor has a 6 spline pto on it now and if i'm looking at the right thing the 21 spline has been broken off.
as far as serial numbers goes, this is what I found on the rear axle just above and to the right of the pto "020 21T 89513".

Thanks again for the help.
