On my way home from running errands this afternoon I noticed a burning smell...couldnt figure it out. Then I noted that the jeep was sluggish. I lifted off the gas and it slowed way down...I knew what it was immediately, dragging brakes.

I was a mile from home, pulled in the driveway, smoke was billowing out of the wheel well, I doused it with the hose...rotor was semi-glowing.

I got the caliper off and just got back home with a new one. Fun day for sure.

Our van was doing the same, We ran it like that for a month or so due to lack of funds. It wasn't fully locked on though.

Has a froze capilar on a dodge dart, wore the roter so bad I had to replace both to get it where it didn;t pull when the brakes were applied. Gad you didn;t have a roter fire.

What kind of jeep is it? My parents 94 Dodge van/motorhome did the same thing. The rubber hoses deteriorated cause it would sit for months at a time with no use. The hoses would collapse after you left off the brakes keeping pressure on caliper. Had to replace everything from hoses out, man it was a few $$$$
Thankfully you didn't catch it on fire, could've been a disaster.

MY cadillac had this happen once, I diagnosed a failed hose. If I applied the brakes with the front end jacked up, the RF tire would be impossible to turn. I cracked the bleeder and it shot out a load of fluid and then it turned freely. I put on a new hose and it worked fine.

That trick didnt work on the jeep so I knew it was a caliper. New one is on, working great now so far.
