My first Bolens!

I just picked up a G12 needing some work. It's all there, and in pretty good shape, but it's been stored outdoors (though under a tarp) for the last few years. Several things are seized, but luckily the engine and tranny aren't.

The gas tank has lots of gelled gas in it, the fuel lines are rotted, and the carb will definitely need a rebuild. All easy stuff. The PTO control is frozen, which I'm hoping is an easy fix. Hydraulic pump seems OK.

I have a few questions:

1) It's in need of a muffler, which I gather are in very short supply. Does this model share a muffler with any other model? Has anyone tried adapting something like an older Cub Cadet muffler?

2) The steering column wobbles at the top where it enters the housing. Can anyone tell me if there's a common bearing that will fit?

3) What purpose does the "freewheel" plunger serve?

Congrats on your purchase! Those are nice little tractors. I have a G10 so if you need any parts let me know. They are very similar tractors.
1) I have seen several muffler configurations. Either the big muffler that I know was used on the larger G and H series as well as the 6$ mufflers available at any hardware store. I do not know which is correct for your model, but putting the cheap muffler on would require very little work. All you need is a piece of pipe that will clamp on the pipe that is there now that has the thread for the muffler on the other side.

2) I turned a bushing out of a piece of brass I had sitting in the shop that took up the play on one of my tractors steering. I sold it recently, time will tell how it works out.

3) The free wheeling pin is used if you have to roll the tractor. If you want drive to go to the wheels, then you will need the pin pushed in so that it locks the wheel hub to the axle. Be careful removing it and do not pry on it or you can snap the ear that is used to hold it in place.

Here is the parts manual for your tractor: http://sonnysbolens.com/manuals/images/tubeframe/1255.pdf

:wwp: or your tractor!

Congrats on your first Bolens. You will love it once you get it going.

The muffler on it is the stock cylindrical job that hangs off the right side of the tractor. I'd like to get something that will fit in place of it without going to one of the "mushroom" style.

Not a bad idea; I'll have to scrounge and see if I have any brass big enough. Oil impregnated bronze would be even better, but I know I don't have any! I haven't take the thing apart yet - did they use a plastic bushing?

Thanks. It's in the freewheel position now, and is frozen in place. I see a date with a can of Kroil in its future!
