Well said, and kept me employed as a HD Diesel mechanic for 50yrs. The other side of the coin is, this is where we, the mechanically informed, score our bargains and laugh all the way to the bank.:trink39:In defense of those who don't know how to work on their own stuff. It keeps me employed! There is some merit in the fact that with small equipment it may not take long to rack up a large bill. Most shops are at a minimum 50/hour and the one I work at is 110/hour. You can't justify working on use equipment before you exceed the cost of a new one.

Exactly. I forget to bite my tongue sometimes and tell people I'm a mechanic. Once they know that, it's hard to bargain with them.Well said, and kept me employed as a HD Diesel mechanic for 50yrs. I have made that mistake before and has cost me :00000060: I tend to keep my mouth shut when picking up classified add stuff now. :duh:Exactly. I forget to bite my tongue sometimes and tell people I'm a mechanic. Once they know that, it's hard to bargain with them.

That is a lot like my friend who used to tow scrap cars into the steel mill. He had an old beater of a truck that really shouldn't have been on the road and people would give him the wrecks for free :fing32:. He did so well, he bought a really decent tow truck. When people saw that, now they all wanted a couple hundred bucks for their scrappers. Something about cutting off your nose to spite your face.:00000060:Exactly. Ditto. I brought in a load of scrap recently and there on the pile was a mildly beat up Cub Cadet 42" blade with a home made bracket for forks. I kindly asked the young man operating the crane if I would be breaking a rule to grab it. He replied with "I'll help you load it after your trailer is unloaded". As he unloaded the guy ahead of me I went and dragged it 30 feet off of the shallow pile and close to my trailer. After he unloaded my trailer with the magnet on the crane, he picked up the blade with the crane and put it in the back of my trailer. Boy was I happy. I weighed it at home and it was 100 pounds. They were paying 7 cents per pound that day so I essentially paid $7.00 for a Cub 42" blade.People sure are funny the way they just abandon good equipment at the drop of a hat and go buy a new one. Must be nice to have money. Love that sickle mower, never had one but sure looks handy. Great score, hope you have lots more friends like that.
Hmm people just stare at me scared :sidelaughI have the opposite problem, I tell people I am a scientist and then just stare at me blankly and treat me like I have no idea I could operate something mechanical.![]()
A guy dad works with gave me a push mower a week or so ago. He told him he would bring it today. Dad calls and tells me he got the push mower and 2 other things that I'd like for $25. The push mower is only a couple years old. They went to start it one day and it made a funny noise so they shut it off and never used it again. With some fresh gas it fired right up. The blade bolt was loose and the blade was vibrating when it was running. Ill probably clean it up and re-sale it. View attachment 368257 . The weed eater didn't run either. After putting a spark plug in it and some fresh gas, it started right up and runs great. The wire and string on the handle don't seem to do anything, I just didn't take them off yet lol. View attachment 368265 . And then my favorite out of the deal. The Gardenway Trailblazer sickle bar mower. Believe it or not after putting gas in the original Briggs 3.5 hp it started on the 3rd or 4th pull. The main pulley was froze but after getting it un-stuck the sickle bar works great. And the self propelled also works good. All it needs now is tires. Wish I could get deals like this everyday! View attachment 368273
