This is a Murray tractor.

Land vehicle Vehicle Tractor Motor vehicle Lawn

Engine Numbers are: 2-39003X92 2021
401707 0631 01 and then; 81038112.
16 Hp @3600 Rpm.
356 Cc’s.
The Coils Died. Both sides of the coil apparently. Does anybody know how to Ohm out these coils? What kinds of numbers should I expect?

It has a Ground wire, which is the Kill switch wire I think.
Then it has two Hi tension leads.
The Coil is one of the Electronic coils that has the small coil to act like points.

Thinking it might be rusted or poor grounds, I pulled the Mag off, cleaned the pads up with a wire brush, used some conductive grease and screwed it down tight with .006-.010 Air gap.
Still nothing. Not even weakly spark.
Am I stuck with replacing it?
Any help would be appreciated!

make sure that kill wire is not grounding . Given age theer is good chance of bad coil but that's an 1981 engine so should have points and condenser so you need to check those out first.

The lopsided appearance of the coil is a giveaway that it's a "magnetron" coil; no points.

It looks like you've got the kill wire ungrounded so if it's not sparking there's really nothing else to do other than replace it.
Thanks Chagrin, I think I knew that but didnt want to accept it.
Somwhere in there, that little 'Reverse Coil' that acts like Points is shorted to ground so the Primaries are just draining to ground right as they build up.

It's Potted, so I cannot take it apart.
Replacment is the only option. DRAT! :(
Maybe it's still under waranty?? :banghead3

:sorry1:
:thThumbsU I read up on it and there is a Date code stamped on it somewhere.
Maybe....:praying:

I got the Tractor, a tiller, a broken pressure sprayer for $45.
He said the Tractor was on his Farm, he rented the Farm and the guy took the tractor.
He had to locate the Tractor and 'steal' it back. That's when he lost all the implements for it.
Too bad, but on the other hand I've had a couple good years out of this Tractor for $45. Maybe I'll ask for a Warrenty in writing for the next Magnatron!:fing32:
