Well, on My GT18 I decided get the F04 muffler with the flapper, and that worked out well... I decided on the SS12 to go a slightly different route. In my searches online, I came across some small silencers that fit into 1 1/2" pipe. They are basically ultra small glasspack mufflers

Then I took a 6" long piece of 1" pipe, screwed it to a 90 degree elbow, which I welded a 1" to 1 1/4" adapter too.

Then I took a 1 1/4" close nipple and ground all the threads off half of it so it would fit into the 1 3/8" fence post I bought to use for the exhaust and slid one of the "glasspacks" into it then tack welded it into the nipple.

Then I cut a length of pipe about 30" long, cut and angle off the end, turned it and welded it back on so it looks like this

And all the parts before i finished assembling it

The second glasspack i slid halfway down the pipe, drilled four holes in it, and welded the glasspack in where I drilled the holes so it makes two silencers in the pipe.

and this is what it looks like on the tractor. The funny thing is, it runs much better, cause it has more back pressure now, and it sounds NOICE!

Thats pretty cool! I didn't know you could get those. Do they come in 2"?
I am not sure... I got them from a motorcycle parts supplier, they sell these as a slide in silencer for bikes that are too loud. Great price too!

All total, this stack cost about $27.00- Less than half what the other stack I built for my GT18 cost. I think that one ended up costing $70.00 or a little more but i bought the stuff at two different times, so it wasn't so bad a hit on the old wallet.

I need to grind my ugly welds and paint the stack- maybe make some sort of perf steel shield...

Thats where I bought it... My stack on the GT18 is a Stanley F04, Hugh just put a Stanley AC-1 on his SS15- you should see his thread here- his has longer pipe on the muffler, and has lots of baffles in it, but the F04 has a block in the middle of the pipe so the exhaust has to work to get through the baffles harder to get out of the muffler. I think the AC-1 may be quieter though.

GT 80;

Could you list the source, (web page link if possible), of your mini-muffler? I would be interested in doing something similar on my B&S, 16 hp, Sears Varidrive tractor.
Yeah I guess... I was thinking of making some of these and selling them, but I don't mind helping out fellow members...

The Mufflers I bought from a guy on ebay

8" long version

4" long version

They sell them in 1 3/8 and 1 1/2 sizes

Here is the seller store timeless motorcycle parts

As you can see, they are really economical!!

I learned the hard way about the "zinc chills" ,after I welded % brazed some galvanized sheet metal to the rotted floors of my old '72 K5 Blazer I had some years ago--after an afternoon of being in the truck with the white smoke that came off the metal as I heated it,I soon got very nauseated, vomited, and had diarrea for several days after, along with severe stomach cramps....I even had a fan blowing the fumes out of the cab,had the truck outside with the doors and rear hatch open too....

I seem to be dumb about remembering things like that, because I've caught myself attempting to do the same thing a few times since then, but usually after I start the job I say "uhhh--better get the fan and remember to hold my breath a lot this time!"..
